Dear Bozeman City Commission,
I am asking you to please provide the time and space for a proper public
hearing on the Kagy Expansion Project.
I am writing to you as a former MSU student who would ride her bike to
class — rain, shine or snow. I am writing to you as a supporter of the
Bozeman Climate Plan, especially the part where you vowed to reduce
vehicle emissions. I’m writing to you as an active community member
who cares deeply about this place and who intends to stay in Bozeman
for years and years to come (assuming I can afford to live here, but I
suppose that’s a story for another comment).
I’m also writing to you as someone who is very much part of the
problem. I live off of Bozeman Trail Road, and Kagy is the primary road I
use when heading into town to grocery shop, to see friends, or to
recreate in Hyalite or Gallatin Canyon. Like many Bozemanites, I drive a
gas-guzzling Toyota Tacoma. And like many Americans, I will
subconsciously drive more if it’s made more convenient.
Please, don’t make it more convenient.
It seems like there are better alternatives. Perhaps a smaller, three lane
design? Or a road that favors bike lanes and pedestrian crossings? Or
perhaps one that makes car travel slow enough for people to seek
alternatives?
I may not be an urban planner, but I do know that bigger isn’t always
better. I think it only makes sense to open up this conversation to the
larger public so we can hear from some of Bozeman’s best, brightest and
most committed (not to mention, the taxpayers who will be fronting the
bill for this).
Thank you for your consideration and I hope to see this on the agenda
soon.
Kindly,
Amanda Garant
