It went to Rick K. and neighborhood. Rick: Thanks for your strong support for the center circle on 6th & Story. I am a supporter of traffic calming at our intersection, but more concerned about pedestrian safety. I believe that even intersection bulbs would be acceptable there like the ones on 8th. I observe a great deal of cross traffic using Story as a through-street with both pedestrians and vehicular traffic. In fact, I believe Story carries more traffic than 6th Ave. It is a regular route for Irving students, MSU staff and students, neighborhood dog walkers, and Cooper park users. I feel that some sort of calming device at this intersection should be included in this massive project. Since the cost of one more center circle added to the overall project costs is minimal, why not protect the safety of all at this busy intersection? Once the center circle is installed at 6th & Koch, three of the Cooper Park corners will be made safer. Why not make if four with the inclusion of 6th & Story? While we got some movement per the WebEX meeting last week, the City omitted consideration for a permanent circle at the Story intersection. There’s no credible reason this one should have been omitted. The City did recognize the need/importance for one at Olive. I’m happy about that acknowledgment by the City. I’m willing to further pursue the center circle (CC) at Story intersection, but others will need to jump into the fray and support further pursuit for one here. I don’t have the energy to tackle this by myself. The City is going to allow permanent landscaping within the Harrison and Alderson circles. My wife, Mary, and I will take on the vegetative improvements within the Alderson circle. Others will need to tackle the Harrison vegetative planting. The circle at Olive isn’t a slam-dunk as yet. Its fate, according to City, will depend on construction bids coming in favorably and under budget, so the Olive CC could get axed if the forthcoming contractor bidding process exceeds the City’s budget for the SID. Personally, I don’t think that’s acceptable for the fate of the Olive CC. The construction cost of installing these circles is pittance in relation of the overall cost/budget for the 6th SID. Greg Peterson, when your back in Bozeman we should visit about a course of action, led by residents in the 100 & 200 blocks to insure the Olive CC remains in the project and doesn’t get eliminated over a cost issue. The City can find a way to fund this CC. I can tell you it’s not that big a deal from a cost perspective. In other words the City can surely find $8000 (each) or so to fund the Olive and Story CCs. Dick and Mary Pohl, I’d like to know what your thoughts are in connection with the CC @ Story issue. We can probably challenge the Story circle some more and I’ll hang in there with you and fight for it, but I’m not going to pursue it along and will need backing from you, Dick and Mary, plus folks in the 300 & 400 blocks. See, the City is well aware that 6th residents are not supported, organized, funded like an HOA (home owner’s association). In the City’s mind we are an ad hoc and unorganized group of property owners, who are too fragmented to mount any concerted effort to counter/challenge City Engineering plans for the project. I think that’s what the City’s counting on with their latest mandates in Kellen’s e-mail on Friday last week. I’m just running my thoughts here up the flag pole w/all of you. I’m willing to help, but unwilling to lead the charge with help from other residents. Thanks for your help to get us where we are. It can either end here or we can pursue matters further.
