To: City of Bozeman Commission Members
Concerning: Application 20112 Buffalo Run Zone change
Dear Commission Members,
We have lived on Fowler Lane for more than 40 years. We have raised our two sons here and they have
raised their sons here. They are 5th and 6th generation Montanans. We live ½ mile from the proposed R5
development proposed on land that has been zoned one home per twenty acres for many, many years.
Fowler Lane is an agricultural area. These first two miles are a gravel road. I have watched the city moving
closer every year and know that it will come. However, I felt protected by the zoning regulations…one
home per 20 acres. Taking one home per 20 acres to an R5 development is atrocious! Fowler Lane is not
the place for high-density zoning. At what point are you going to protect the landowners whom have
worked hard for years in a zoned area that values open land, livestock, crop production, and wildlife? In
addition, this proposed R5 development is less than ¼ mile from land where elk routinely migrate for
winter-feed. We feel especially bad for the neighbors bordering this zone change request. For years they
have worked hard on their beautiful property and home, knowing that they were protected from high-
density housing. They paid the high price for their land as one home per 20 acres. Please help them by not
allowing high density right next to their rural homes and animals, no matter what!! R5 development does
not fit with anything on Fowler Lane. It isn’t right or honest to allow for R5 zoning in an area zoned 1-home
per 20 acres. Zoning is supposed to protect people. We buy property and build our homes where the
zoning fits the lifestyle, goals, business and our dreams. This is very different from the subdivision off of
19th east of us. There were only 2 homes in that area and all farmland when the zoning was changed for
that subdivision. On Fowler Lane we have many homes and people affected by this.
We, in agriculture, are being pushed out. Fowler Lane is used to move cattle, horses, llamas, it is used by
our tractors and baling equipment, combines, bale wagons, etc. People use the lane to walk their dogs, ride
bikes with their children, and ride horses because it is a gravel road with less traffic than Cottonwood to the
west and 19th to the east. Both of these roads are dangerous on which to try to move equipment or ride
horses. Zoning is supposed to protect us and the lifestyle that comes with that zoning. Do the honest thing
and deny R5 zoning in this unique agricultural area. R5 is atrocious and does not fit anything on Fowler
Lane.
Thank you for your consideration.
