HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-03-21 Public Comment - S. Staub - Northwest CrossingFrom: Sherry Staub To: Agenda Subject: Wetland discussion Date: Wednesday, February 3, 2021 6:39:47 AM Dear Commission and Staff During the course of the discussion about the development of the property Northwest Crossing one of the commissioners said that this development would have "little impact on wildlife". I don't think any sort of study was sited to support this statement. I would therefore invite commissioners to walk the area that is in the discussion. I not only live nearby...but actually walk this area on a regular basis. Here's what I see on any given day: Blue Heron, Sandhill Cranes, Canada Geese, Red Tail Hawks, Bald Eagles, partridge, killdeer and a host of "regulars" like ravens, crows, magpies, and songbirds, While I might not see them, there are mammals galore ....which explains the constant presence of Bald Eagles and Hawks Seriously...take a walk down the unpaved portion of Cottonwood between Oak and Baxter as well as Oak street west to where it ends. It might seem like "little impact" to us....as we drive by from the comfort of our car not noticing who already lives there. I realize that you all are very aware of the importance of protecting wetlands, but I would also recommend that whenever your vote is required, you actually walk around the wildlife "neighborhood". If for no other reason than to acknowledge to the "residents" there, that we recognize the impact on their lives. Also, with all due respect to Mayor Andrus, I would not recommend any sort of homage to drain tiles in the proposed parks. Those tiles disrupted the natural flow and presence of water. Now, that very same land is irrigated!!! I think even interpretive signage...could be misinterpreted! Perhaps signage to recognize the value of wetlands would better serve the purpose of environmental awareness One final note regarding dog parks....These are often placed next to what little remains of the creeks, streams and rivers that remain when we've encroached on natural lands....and if you think about it, the last thing a crane or heron or possible mammals which would continue to draw the larger raptors...are a mass of huge, barking, running, sniffing dogs! I just feel uncomfortable catering to dogs while downplaying the needs of wildlife. Despite my comments, I do appreciate all you all do and your care for the natural gifts within our community. Also, I want to offer my concern and empathy to Commissioner Madgic on the sudden illness of her dog. I had a dog that had seizures multiple times a week despite the fact that at any other time, she was energetic and happy. It is an exceedingly unnerving experience....the loss of bowel and bladder control, howling and overall distress is traumatic for both the pet and the owner. I do wish some sort of comfort was offered to Commissioner Madgic when this happened. I know that city business needs to be conducted professionally, but hopefully empathy is never considered unprofessional. Thank you for your patience with my rambling.
