HomeMy WebLinkAbout12-21-20 Public Comment - C. Groves - plans to widen KagyFrom:Craig Groves To:Terry Cunningham Cc:Jennifer Madgic; Agenda Subject:plans to widen Kagy Date:Tuesday, December 22, 2020 5:16:53 AM Dear Deputy Mayor Cunningham and City Commissioner Madgic, I recently read guest columnist Randy Carpenter's column in the Bozeman Daily Chronicleconcerning widening Kagy. For the record, I live in this area in Sundance Springs subdivision and regularly use the stretch of Kagy near MSU for transportation and have been using Kagyregularly for getting around Bozeman in the 19 years I have lived here. I have considerable reservations about the city of Bozeman plans to expand Kagy to four lanes through the MSU area. While I was not involved in a 2016 community engagement process onthis issue that resulted in significant input on the value of a three lane option with extensive multi modal infrastructure facilitating safe and efficient pedestrian and bicycle usage, botheast/west and north/south on Willson, I am supportive of that option. The costs of the proposed four lane expansion far outweigh the benefits, and as Randy Carpenter points out,the benefits of expansion don't typically last very long and only bring more traffic. In addition the project seems inconsistent with Bozeman's Community plan and developing ClimateAction Plan. My understanding is that the Commission may be taking this topic up in its meeting today, December 22. My hope is that you will consider a much wider community engagement andvetting of options for the proposed Kagy expansion and not approve any action to move forward on a four lane expansion until the citizens of Bozeman have an opportunity for inputand follow up to the 2016 engagement process.
