As you consider the city budget and capital improvements plan, please consider increasing the percentage of road-building funds that are allocated to bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian ways & safety, and other "complete streets" improvements. Our whole family is commuting on bikes frequently, into the winter months, and we feel safer where bike infrastructure is evident. If you build it, cyclists will use it, I am sure. A complete system of bikeways, paths, bike lanes, sharrows and lesser-traveled bike-friendly streets would liberate people of all ages who like to commute on bikes, help prevent accidents, and help the city attain its sustainability goals, which I applaud. The city (and county) should invest more in developing bike routes through and around Bozeman. I agree wholeheartedly with Egge & Kack's opinion in the BDC on Dec. 2, and Carpenter's on the 20th, where they point to the high cost of the proposed Kagy project. Based on my reading in the history of urban design, it is apparent that simply widening streets will not cure our traffic woes, which in the case of Kagy Blvd. are of pretty short duration, around 5 p.m. I agree that prioritizing other projects such as finishing the shared use path on 19th, improvements to College Street, and others would be a better use of funds.
