Below is a letter we are sending out to citizens who might be interested. Feel free to forward this to the City Council and others you think would like to know about this. Call if you have any questions. Mike Penfold, Our Montana 406-672-6630 Dear Montana History Stakeholder; Our Montana and the Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association, non-profit organizations, are planning to ask the U.S. Congress for legislation directing the Secretary of Interior to undertake a feasibility study leading to the formal designation of the Bozeman Trail in Montana and Wyoming as a National Historic Trail. The process for requesting a study and subsequent National Historic Trail designation is found in the National Trails System Act, as amended [16USC1241]. Before formally making the request to our congressional representatives we are undertaking anoutreach effort to garner letters of support, provide information, answer questions, and identifyconcerns. We will be sending this mailing to key stakeholders in Montana and Wyoming including;County Commissioners, state and local governments, elected officials, federal land managementagencies, museums, historic preservation organizations, and Indian Tribes. Attaining National Historic Trail status will increase visitation to local, state, and federal historic sites and museums. Increased interest and visitation will directly benefit local economies. Formal designation will strengthen grant and other funding requests for preservation of trail segments and enhanced educational opportunities at associated developed sites and museums along the route. The Bozeman Trail route passes through eight counties in Montana and five counties in Wyoming. The Trail crosses private, state and federally managed public lands. One part of a feasibility studywill be to develop a definitive location for the Trail in each county. The National Trails Actspecifically states that preservation and/or interpretation of original trail segments will beenhanced on public lands and only on private lands where the landowner wishes to participate, and landowner permission has been granted. If a feasibility study is authorized, the lead federalagency will conduct full public participation with public meetings and a formal comment period forthe project. The attached Question and Answer and Brief History documents provide additional information on the National designation process and the Bozeman Trail.
