The feature is a single-story, wood-framed contemporary commercial building with a mansard roof. It has an essentially rectangular footprint, though the north façade has two rectangle projections. One contains a metal service double door on the east end of the façade. The other projection contains a two-sided entry centered on the façade. The foundation is poured concrete. The exterior of the building is clad in vertically-oriented wood panels. The mansard roof is corrugated metal, as are the shed-roofed overhangs which are found on the north façade, protecting the entry areas, and on a portion of the west side, providing shade to the seating areas inside. Entry to the business is on the north façade, through two separated openings. Both entries are recessed. The entry on the east end of the façade is accessed by a series of concrete steps. The entry on the west side is accessible by an ADA-compliant ramp with metal railings which wraps around the northwest corner, connecting to paved path from the parking lot. A cobblestone flower box is centered on the north façade between the entry areas. Another similar cobblestone flower box is asymmetrically placed under windows on the west side of the building, where the shed roof projects to create shade. The window locations and shapes appear original but the windows themselves have been replaced. Centered on the entry block of the north façade is a commercial grade fixed-lite picture window. To each side of the entries, but on the main building façade, are oval fixed-lite windows. A double casement window is above the ramp on the west end of the north façade. On the west façade are seven single fixed-lite windows, four of which are under the shed roof overhang. Four of the same type single-fixed-lite windows are on the south façade. The east façade was not visible from the ROW. The site is well maintained. Plantings on the south façade along Beall Avenue are in good condition. Recorded by James R. McDonald in a 1983 survey, the property was noted to have an exterior finish of brick veneer with wood shakes on the mansard roof. At that time the site was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district”, and assessment indicated “the historic integrity of this property has not been retained due to change in original design and materials.” No notes indicate when the exterior siding was changed. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 302 N 7TH AVE Site Number: 021 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This commercial property was erected in 1938. A cursory search provided limited historical context for this site. No significant associations were found. For many years the building at 302 N 7th in Bozeman was home to a Longhorn Steak House, a national franchise eatery. Currently the building continues to be operated as a restaurant, but one based on a different, socially conscious model. Fork & Spoon is Montana’s first social enterprise restaurant, whose profit supports the common good within the community. Using traditional business strategies that generate profit and sustainable income, these are then reinvested in the company itself to advance a chosen social agenda. A “pay-what-you-can” model, combined with daily customers who pay at a suggested price, generates operating income. In addition Fork & Spoon operates a work-force development program and offers catering services. The property was first recorded by James R. McDonald in 1983. The property is in good condition and has experienced modifications over time. These include a change in the exterior siding, and the addition of a handicap-accessible ramp to facilitate entrance to the business. McDonald in 1983, and at that time was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district”, and assessment indicated “the historic integrity of this property has not been retained due to change in original design and materials.” Metcalf Archaeological Consultants visited the site in October 2019 and has reassessed the potential eligibility of the site. Metcalf finds that the site retains a level of integrity sufficient to convey historic character. While it lacks distinction in its architectural style and is not a strong representative of a period or method of construction under Criterion C, current survey data are insufficient to determine historic associations under Criteria A, B, and D. Therefore, the site should be considered unevaluated. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 302 N 7TH AVE Site Number: 021 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The overall site condition is excellent. New siding replacing the original brick veneer of the walls, new metal roofing replacing the wood shakes of the mansard roof, and replacement windows have affected the feeling and the materials. However, the aspects of design, location, workmanship, and setting remain largely intact.
