MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Architectural Description Property Name: 423 E TAMARACK ST Site Number: 121 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Minimal traditional Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in c. 1942. At least four other features were visible from the public ROW but appear to be modern constructions. The house is a wood-framed single-story structure built in the Minimal Traditional style, but has since undergone several modifications and additions. The additions and an attached garage off the east side of the house have resulted in an irregular plan. The house’s foundation is concrete, and the roof is irregular. The front façade is cross-gabled, while the rest of the roof has gables, asymmetrical gables, and shed roofs. The exterior walls are clad in wood shingles on most of the house and horizontal wood siding on the attached garage. The primary façade faces west, perpendicular to E Tamarack St. The primary entrance is behind a fence and beneath a small cross gable on the southern end of the west façade. Most of the original windows have been replaced and the openings have been altered, but a few of the replaced windows retain their original openings. The four additional structures noted above appear to be modern. They include two sheds, a small barn, and an enclosed structure. One shed is in the northwestern corner of the yard. It is small and has a green fiberglass corrugated roof. The second shed is to the north of the attached garage. It is a small front-gabled structure with horizontal wood siding and a window on the north wall. The entrance/front facade is presumed to be on the west side. The barn is just north of the latter shed. It has a side-gabled roof and is clad with horizontal wood siding and flat wood panels in the roof gable. The fourth building is a small front-gabled enclosed structure, located directly west of the barn. The exterior walls have weather protectant but no siding, and two large vertical windows on the southeast exterior wall. Its entrance is presumably on the southwest facing elevation but was not visible from the public ROW. Overall, the site is in fair condition. The shingle siding is in poor condition and the attached garage roof is slightly sagging. The vegetation surrounding the property includes large mature coniferous tree on both the east and west ends of the property and scattered deciduous bushes and trees. Due to the numerous modifications, additions, and overall fair condition, Metcalf finds that the site no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. The site is in fair condition, overall, but lacks integrity sufficient to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. The site does not retain adequate integrity and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district and is not directly associated with contemporaneous residential properties documented in the vicinity that were moved to this area. Metcalf recommends that the site be considered not eligible and, in consideration of other historic properties within the Northern Pacific Addition, non-contributing to a potential district.
