Architectural Description
Property Name: 807 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 039
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A
This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in c. 1910. The house is a wood-framed, two story structure with characteristics of the Queen Anne style including its asymmetrical form and cross-gabled roof. The house has a roughly T-
shaped plan with a gabled wing off the north elevation, and a concrete foundation. The roof is cross gabled and covered with asphalt shingles. There is some half timbering in the gable ends, and another stylistic embellishment is the canted corners on the first story, on
the gable front. The exterior is clad in a wood shingle skirt with stucco on the walls above.
The primary façade faces south, onto W Babcock St. It is asymmetrical with the entry at the east end of the front façade within a pedimented porch that extends to the east with an added shed roof. The original windows have all been replaced but most of the
openings appear to be intact. The windows are double hung. There are modern openings on the north wing, which suggest that the wing is a later addition. Also, the windows appear to have been removed altogether from the west half of the north elevation. The
exterior wood staircase on the north wall, accessing the upper story, is not original.
Overall, the site is in fair condition. The exterior stucco shows moisture damage, and there is some paint failing. Vegetation surrounding the house include a mature deciduous tree directly south of the front façade, and more mature deciduous and coniferous
trees in the backyard north of the house.
The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered a “neutral element within a potential historic district,” and was described as have a rectangular plan, which suggests the addition was added after 1984.
The site is in fair condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 807 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 039
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ Section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. This piece of land was originally platted as a street on the original Story Addition plat. On November 17, 1898, City Ordinance No. 174 vacated this street and the land went to Nelson and Ellen Story.
Elias Story purchased the property on November 4, 1874 and sold it almost immediately to Ellen Story on November 14, 1874. Elias Story Jr. purchased the property on July 29, 1889 from Ellen and Nelson Story and then sold it back to them on August 1, 1889. Nelson and Ellen Story sold the property to W. H. Stevens on June 30, 1904. The residence on this property was built after 1904 and before 1912, possibly in late 1904 by W. H. Stevens. A small addition was
made to the west side of the house between 1912 and 1927 (Sanborn Map Company, 1904, 1912, 1927 and 1943). This residence had no long-term residents from 1904 to 1925. It was bought and sold by various parties with no one owning the property for more than three years during this time.
William D. Brock purchased the property on November 30, 1904. Brock worked in real estate. By 1908 Brock had moved to Belgrade and sold the property (R. L. Polk & Co., 1906, 1908). H. Gysbert and Margaret Klenze purchased the property from William Brock on September 28, 1908. They owned the property until January 18, 1909 when they sold it to Hal M. Stewart. Hal M. Stewart never lived in the residence. He was born in Monroe County, Ohio in 1875 and came to Bozeman, Montana in 1902. He practiced law while living in Bozeman and was a prominent Bozeman attorney. His brother was Sam V. Stewart, democratic
Governor of Montana from 1913 through 1920 (Malone and Roeder 1969). Hal served Gallatin County as a member of the lower house of the legislative assembly in 1913. He held the rank of captain and was chief disbursing officer in Montana for the United States Army during the first World War. He was police judge in Bozeman when he died suddenly on May 18, 1932 in Helena, Montana of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in Helena to attend the democratic state convention (The Independent-Record, 18 May
1932).
Judge William L. and Lalia H. Holloway purchased the property from Stewart on March 13, 1913. William Lawson Holloway had been born in Kirksville, Missouri on November 8, 1867. In 1891 he enrolled in the University of Michigan law school, where he received his degree in law. He moved to Bozeman in 1892 and opened a law office. William married Lalia Holmes on February 17, 1898 in Butte, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2017). In 1900, he was elected judge of the Ninth judicial district which at that time
comprised of Gallatin, Broadwater, and Meagher counties. He also served as county attorney for Gallatin County (The Independent-Record, 12 Dec 1926). Lalia Holmes had been born in Prairie City, Oregon on December 31, 1869 to Dr. and Mrs. L. E. Holmes. Her
father, Dr. Holmes, was a prominent physician in Helena in the late 1870s, having moved to Helena from Deer Lodge in 1875. He later moved to Butte and practiced medicine there for many years. After having graduating from high school in Helena, Lalia attended
Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Upon her return to Helena she was a member of the Montana Wesleyan College faculty for a year. After her marriage to Judge Holloway the couple lived in Bozeman until they moved to Helena in 1901 (The
Independent-Record, 27 May 1923). They never resided in this residence.
A. I. and Frank M. Lillard purchased the property on May 16, 1914. Charles and Isabella Pietsch purchased the property on March 1, 1915, and then sold it back to the Lillards on March 15, 1918. The Lillard family lived in the residence from 1914 until they moved to
Azusa, California in 1925. While living in the residence Frank worked as a driver for the American Railway Express Company (R. L. Polk & Company, 1918, 1925). Frank and Attie had two sons, John and Harry. While living in this residence their sons served in the
first World War (Ancestry.com, 2010).
E. J. Parkin purchased the property from the Lilliards on April 2, 1927. Parkin sold the property to Clara A. Crew on April 20, 1928. Clara Crew had been born on July 4, 1873 in Nebraska to Mr. and Mrs. Avid McCracken. She married Charles L. Crew in 1890. They
moved to Bozeman in 1910 and ranched in the Gallatin Valley. They moved into this residence in 1928 and occupied the residence until Charles died in 1939. Clara then moved to 317 West Lamme Street in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Company, 1942). Clara moved to
Billings in 1943 and died there in 1968 (The Billings Gazette, 6 July 1968).
Clara Crew sold the property to Anna C. Hansen on March 29, 1941. Hansen sold the property to Eva H. Lovelace on April 5, 1945. Lovelace sold the property to Claude B. and Mildred L. Richardson on February 11, 1946. They quickly sold it to Joseph P. and Helen
May Buckmaster and Hattie M. Dean on December 7, 1946.

William L. and Della M. Butts purchased the property on September 2, 1950. William Butts had been born on March 28, 1880 in Fredericktown, Missouri and came to Lewistown, Montana as a child with his family. He homesteaded in Dawson County. He married Della M. Badgley in Anaconda in 1936, a second marriage for them both (The Billings Gazette, 4 September 1955). Della Haines had been born in Garden Grove, Kansas and came to Montana with her parents overland in a wagon in 1890. William Butts died in 1955 and Della Butts died in 1965 (Great Falls Tribune, 4 August 1965). The Butts did not live in this residence while they owned it; they lived at 116 North Grand Avenue (R. L. Polk & Company, 1954).
The property went to Cecil F. and Beatrice W. Badgley and Kenneth L. and Ruth Butts on November 15, 1969. Cecil Badgley was the son of Della Butts and Kenneth Butts was the son of William Butts (findagrave.com, 2004). Badgley and Butts deeded a quit claim to Herschel D. Moore, Jr. and Joan Y. Moore on February 25, 1974. The Moores quickly sold the property to Gene E. and Marlys W. Cook and N. A. and Michaela Shyne on February 28, 1974. Thomas W. and Marie G. Fellows
purchased the property on November 9, 1977. William Sebena purchased the property on April 13, 1983 and Lisa Sebena is listed as the owner in 2019 county tax records. Table 1. Chain of Title, 807 West Babcock Street, Bozeman, Montana.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This property consists of one historic architectural feature: a house built in c. 1910. The house is a wood-framed, two story structure with characteristics of the Queen Anne style. The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time,
it was considered a “neutral element within a potential historic district.” The site is in fair condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is
not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of contemporaneous structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Story Addition to evaluate district potential.
