It was historically a single family dwelling, but is now Angel Law Firm. The structure is a single-story wood framed Craftsman bungalow. It has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is front gabled and clad in wood shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding with wood shingles in the gables. The gables are also bracketed, and the rafter tails are exposed. The primary façade faces south, onto W Babcock St. The primary entrance is on the west end of the south façade beneath a hipped roofed full-width porch with square posts. Most of the original windows and openings are intact and include divided over single lite windows. Windows also flank the brick chimney on the east elevation. The west elevation has a narrow shed roofed single stall attached garage that dates within the historic period. The site is in excellent condition and is well maintained. Vegetation around the property includes mature deciduous trees off the southeast corner of the house. The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development.” The site is in excellent condition overall, and Metcalf finds it still retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 803 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 038 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. Elias Story purchased the property on November 4, 1874 and sold it almost immediately to Ellen Story on November 14, 1874. On January 1, 1903 Ellen and Nelson Story sold the property to their son, Thomas Byron Story. Thomas Byron and wife Kate Story sold the property to Hal M. Stewart on May 14, 1909. Hal M. Stewart purchased the property on May 14, 1909 but never lived here. He had been born in Monroe County, Ohio in 1875 and came to Bozeman, Montana in 1902. He practiced law while living in Bozeman and was a prominent Bozeman attorney. His brother was S. V. Stewart, a Governor of Montana. He served Gallatin County as a member of the lower house of the legislative assembly in 1913. He held the rank of captain and was chief disbursing officer in Montana for the United States Army during the first World War. He was police judge in Bozeman when he died suddenly on May 18, 1932 in Helena, Montana of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in Helena to attend the democratic state convention (The Independent-Record, 1932). Judge William L. and Lalia H. Holloway purchased the property from Stewart on March 13, 1913. William Lawson Holloway had been born in Kirksville, Missouri on November 8, 1867. In 1891 he enrolled in the University of Michigan law school, where he received his degree in law. He moved to Bozeman in 1892 and opened a law office. William married Lalia Holmes on February 17, 1898 in Butte, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2017). Lalia Holmes had been born in Prairie City, Oregon on December 31, 1869 to Dr. and Mrs. L. E. Holmes. Her father, Dr. Holmes, was a prominent physician in Helena in the late 1870s, after having moved to Helena from Deer Lodge in 1875. He later moved to Butte, Montana, and practiced medicine there for many years. After graduating from High School in Helena, Lalia attended Wellesley college in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Upon her return to Helena she was a member of the Montana Wesleyan college faculty for a year. After her marriage to Judge Holloway the couple lived in Bozeman. In 1900, William Holloway was elected judge of the Ninth judicial district which at that time comprised of Gallatin, Broadwater, and Meagher Counties. He also served as county attorney for Gallatin County (The Independent-Record, 12 December 1926). William and Lalia moved to Helena in 1901 (The Independent-Record, 27 May 1923). They never resided in this residence. A. I. and Frank M. Lillard purchased the property from the Holloways on May 16, 1914. In 1914 the Lillard family is living at 807 W. Babcock. In 1918 they are living at 809 W. Babcock. In 1920 and 1922 they are living at this residence, 805 W. Babcock according to the 1920 census and city directory listing. It is possible all these addresses may be different iterations of this residential location. In 1925, the family moved to Azusa, California. Frank worked as a driver for the American Railway Express Company (R. L. Polk & Company, 1918, 1925). Frank and Attie had two sons, John and Harry, who served in the first World War (Ancestry.com, 2010). E. J. Parkin purchased the property from the Lilliards on April 2, 1927. Myrtle E. Dokken purchased the property from E. J. Parkin on June 28, 1930. Myrtle and Herman Dokken had been married on March 20, 1918 in Great Falls, Montana. Herman was a funeral director at Dokken Funeral Home in Bozeman for forty years prior to his retirement in 1950. He was also a Montana state senator. The Dokkens lived in this residence from 1930 until c. 1935 when they moved to 412 South Willson Avenue in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Company, 1930, 1931, 1933, and 1935). Richard P. and Sophia K. Bailey purchased the property from the Dokkens on June 22, 1937. Richard Bailey had been born in Helena on November 22, 1885. He made his way to Bozeman and worked in the fruit, vegetable, and grocery wholesale industry in Bozeman most of his adult life. In 1946 he was the manager of the Bozeman Gamble Robinson company. An explosion in the company warehouse took his life on August 5, 1946 (The Montana Standard, 1946). Richard’s wife, Sophia Kammerer, had been born in Virginia City on February 28, 1896 to William and Elizabeth Kammerer. She moved to Bozeman with her family in 1908. She was an accomplished musician with a degree in music from Montana State College (named Montana State University in 1965). She was known and remembered for playing the background music at the silent movies at the Ellen Theatre. Sophia Bailey died in Bozeman on October 2, 1983 (The Billings Gazette, 1983). Sophia and Richard lived in the residence on this property from 1937 to 1946; Sophia continued to live here until 1958 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1937 to 1958). Sophia Bailey sold the property to W. H. and Ruth Lawton on March 20, 1948. The Lawtons sold the property back to Sophia Bailey and Irene Kammerer on the same day, March 20, 1948. Irene Kammerer was a sister of Sophia Bailey’s and had lived with the Baileys in this residence off and on since they purchased the property. Irene Kemmerer had also been born in Virginia City, before her sister, on November 7, 1894. She never married. Irene worked as a milliner for many years at Graham Millinery in Tacoma, Washington and then later at Fisher’s Department store in Bozeman until she retired (The Billings Gazette, 1982). It was historically a single-family dwelling but is now Angel Law Firm. The structure is a single-story wood framed Craftsman bungalow. It was first recorded in 1984 by James R. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing of potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. While it does have historic associations with Herman Dokken, a prominent local funeral director and state senator, this association is not believed to satisfy requirements for individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its association with the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Story Addition to evaluate district potential.
