MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 606 W MAIN ST Site Number: 075; part of 24GA953 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in c. 1906. Listed in 1987 as a contributing feature within the Cooper Park Historic District, the site is a wood-framed 1.5-story Queen Anne style house. It has a roughly rectangular footprint with a stone foundation, reinforced with concrete. Its form is asymmetrical; the roof is side gabled, with transecting gabled dormers. The roof is clad in seamed steel sheets. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal clapboards. The primary façade faces north onto W Main St. The asymmetrical façade has two primary bays: the east half which contains a recessed corner porch and entry, and the west half which is dominated by a 1.5-story gable-front wall dormer. The front porch at the east end has a hipped roof that extends past the east, past the end of the house, sheltering a basement entrance at the northeast corner. The porch roof is precariously supported by three posts, a square post at the edge of the porch, a Doric wood column at the northeast of the porch roof, which stands on a concrete block in the yard, and another wood column around the northeast corner of the porch, also on a concrete block. The porch roof has a small gabled pediment directly over the wood steps that provide access to the front entry. The entry is located on the east-facing wall of the recessed porch and is a standard side-hung door. Facing north, within the porch, is a large fixed-lite window. To the west of the recessed porch is a small square window. At the far west end of the façade, within a gabled bay, is a large picture window with a decorative fixed transom lite. In the upper half story, within the gabled dormer, is a one-over-one-lite double-hung window. To the east, directly over the recessed porch entry, is a smaller gabled dormer, also containing a one-over-one-lite double-hung window. This dormer is clad in wood shingles. The steeply pitched roof of the house is pierced by a brick chimney, slightly east of center. The east elevation has a secondary entrance at the north end, which provides exterior access to the basement. Near the center of the elevation is a bracketed boxed bay window with a large picture window and leaded-glass transom. Above this bay, within the upper half story, is a pair of one-over-one-lite double-hung windows. The apex of the gable contains decorative fish-scale shingles. The west elevation also contains decorative shingles in the apex of the gable end. There are two one-over-on-lite double-hung windows on the first story and two on the second. Basement windows are also present. The rear (south) elevation of the house has a shed-roofed addition on the first story, and a hip-roofed dormer on the upper half story. The elevation contains several one-over-one-lite windows, as well as a single-lite casement window. An exterior wood deck has been built that extends from the upper half-story dormer over the shed-roofed addition. A flight of wood steps leads down from the deck to the southeast corner of the house. A wood-framed, gambrel-roofed 2-story barn is located directly south of the house. It is sided in horizontal wood siding, with vertical boards in the upper story and gable ends. The primary entry is likely on the north elevation, not visible from the public ROW. The east gable end has a second story wood deck with a side-hung door in the upper story. Window openings have been created for fixed windows. The roof has been covered in metal sheets, with single-lite sky lites penetrating the south pitch. The site is in fair condition. Exterior siding, windows, and structural elements such as the porch posts, show deterioration and dry rot. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing feature within the Cooper Park Historic District. Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character and maintain its listed status. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 606 W MAIN ST Site Number: 075; part of 24GA953 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. Nelson and Ellen Story sold the property to Benjamin F. Potts on September 22, 1873. Benjamin Potts had served in the Civil War, receiving the brevet rank of major general at the end of the war. He was a lawyer and returned to Ohio to practice law after the war. He was elected to the Ohio State Senate in 1867. In 1870 he accepted an appointment from President Ulysses S. Grant to serve as governor of the Montana Territory. He served a long term as governor, from July 13, 1870 to January 15, 1883. During his governorship, he was involved in Indian affairs. Potts died in 1887 and is buried in Helena, Montana (The New North-West, 24 Jun 1887). Benjamin F. and Angeline Potts sold the property to Thomas J. Gregg on December 29, 1881. Bessie Gregg sold the property to Z. T. Widener on October 7, 1904. Z. T. and Hettie M. Widener sold the property to J. Lewis Gracey on November 9, 1904. This residence is similar in design to the neighboring 522 W. Main and 516 W. Main structures and was possibly built by J. Lewis Gracey, a local printer and rubber stamp manufacturer. Gracey applied for a sewer connection for the residence on September 26, 1906 (Application for Sewer Connection, 26 September 1906). J. Lewis “Lew” Gracy purchased the property from Z. T. and Hettie M. Widener on October 9, 1904. J. Lewis Gracy had been born on August 30, 1871 in Ogdensboyg, New York to Edward and Adeline Gracy. He came to Bozeman in 1901 from New York, opening a print shop in Bozeman in 1905. He worked as a printer in Bozeman until 1948 when he was forced to retire due to ill health. He was also a proofreader for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle newspaper and a bailiff at the district court for several years (The Bozeman Courier, 12 November 1948). Gracy never married but lived with his sister, Etta Gracy. Lew Gracy died on November 10, 1948 (Great Falls Tribune, 13 November 1948). Gracy sold the property to Mary A. Stucky on October 4, 1910. Mary Hess had been born on November 18, 1854 aboard a ship in the Atlantic Ocean to Jacob Hess and Anna Barbara Eggiman Hess. The family was coming to American from Switzerland. They spent a year in Schenectady, New York, then moved to Wisconsin and later Missouri. Mary married Gottlieb “Guy” Stucky on April 16, 1871 in Missouri (Findagrave.com, 2004). Mary and Guy Stucky moved to the Gallatin valley in 1880 and settled on a farm southwest of Bozeman. In 1910 they retired from the farm, moving into town and into this residence. Guy Stucky died in 1914 and Mary Stucky died at this residence on February 7, 1941 (The Bozeman Courier, 14 February 1941). R. J. and Emma M. Pasha purchased the property from Mary Stucky on May 1, 1920. The property went back to Stucky on October 1, 1922. Ronald J. Pasha had been born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He came to the United States and spent several years in the Dakotas and Nebraska before coming to Montana in 1896. He married Emma Stucky, the daughter of Mary and Gottlieb Stucky, on March 15, 1899. They had a ranch in the Middle Creek area the rest of their lives. Ronald served as deputy sheriff of Gallatin County, was a county commissioner from 1930 to 1936, and was instrumental in building the county courthouse and the Middle Creek dam in Hyalite Canyon. He was a director of the Hyalite Power Company of Bozeman. Emma Pasha died in 1950 and Ronald died in 1951 (Great Falls Tribune, 17 January 1951). The heirs of the Mary Stucky estate received the property after the death of Mary Stucky in 1941. They sold the property to Chris P. Volquardsen on September 3, 1942. Chris P. and Marie Floria Volquardsen sold the property to Erna J. and Jack F. Harding on December 1, 1948, and the Hardings sold it back to the Volquardsens on December 4, 1948. Erna J. Harding was the daughter of Chris and Marie Volquardsen. Margaret E. Devous and Erna J. Harding, the daughters of Chris and Marie Volquardsen, each received a half interest of the property on July 21, 1960. Margaret sold her half interest to Erna on February 22, 1966. The property went to Kirt E. Harding, the son of Erna and Jack Harding, on February 28, 1977 after the death of Jack Harding. The property went back to Erna Harding on January 31, 1978. Erna Harding died in 1981 so the property transferred to Kirt Harding and Danny Craig Harding, sons of Erna and Jack Harding on April 19, 1982. Kirt sold his interest to his brother Danny Harding on April 20, 1982. The property went to Bridget Westfall, Trustee of The Danny Craig Harding Trust on September 5, 2013 and is still owned by the Harding Trust as of February of 2020.
