MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 501 W LAMME ST Site Number: 050 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of a single historical architectural feature: a single-story, wood-framed Craftsman bungalow built in c. 1912. The building has a concrete foundation and a roughly rectangular footprint with an attached single-stall garage at the north end. The house has a cross-gabled roof; a full-width front porch has a side-gabled roof that transects the house’s north-south oriented front-gable. An unusual half-story addition projects from the roofline on the east elevation, like an oversized dormer. The entire roof is clad in asphalt shingles rafter tails are exposed on the front porch. The exterior walls are sided in clapboards, with shingled, battered, porch posts. The primary façade faces south onto W Lamme St. The entrance is a side-hung wood paneled door with an inset two-over-two-lite window. The doorway is centered within the full-width porch. The porch is accessed by a flight of concrete steps on the east side. To either side of the entry are paired three-over-one-lite single-hung windows with aluminum storms. The apex of the front gable peaks out above the side-gabled front porch and contains a paired sliding window. The east elevation consists of the gable end of the front porch at the south end, with the concrete steps providing primary access to the house. To the north is a project box-bay with a shed roof. The bay includes a small shoulder-height three-lite fixed window. To the north of the bay is a secondary entrance. The entrance consists of a standard wood paneled door at-grade. To the south of the door is a pair of small three-over-one-lite windows and to the north is a larger pair of similar three-over-one-lite single-hung windows. Basement sliding windows are also present on this elevation, within the concrete foundation. Projecting from the roof, near center on the east elevation, Is a three-sided side-gabled addition. The addition is essentially a large dormer; it contains a bank of three single- lite casement windows on its east side, and smaller single-lite windows facing north and south. This is a modern addition, with modern materials. At the extreme north end of the east elevation is a shed-roofed single-stall garage with a overhead roller door. The north wall of the attached garage contains a wood-paneled door. The gable end above the attached garage contains a pair of window openings in the apex. A tall wood fence to the west of the house partially obscures the west elevation from the public ROW. The west elevation does contain two shoulder-height three-lite fixed windows and basement lites. This site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was recommended a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development.” Some changes have been made to the site since that time, including the addition of a large dormer on the east elevation. Regardless, Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 501 W LAMME ST Site Number: 050 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is located within Tracy’s 3rd Addition which was platted May 16, 1883 by William H. Tracy. A house was built on this property between 1890 and 1891 based on deed records and Sanborn maps. This house was either moved or demolished and another residence, the house currently at 501 W Lamme St, was built on the property between 1912 and 1927. Charles and Lucille Callaghan purchased this property on April 12, 1912. Charles Callaghan had been born in Joliet, Illinois on April 22, 1850 to Patrick Callaghan and Mary (Quinn) Callaghan. He made his way to Omaha, Nebraska and worked there on the Union Pacific doing construction work. He later drove a bull team from Utah to Silver Star, Montana. There he worked in mines and managed a hotel for one year. He drove a stagecoach between Bozeman, Three Forks, and Helena for two years. Charles was also engaged in railroad and highway contracting, mining, and merchandising (Independent-Record, 20 July 1932). In 1895 he went into farming and raising horses in the Gallatin Valley. He retired in 1910 and made his home in Bozeman. In Bozeman he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Bozeman Elks Lodge. He had married Bridget “Lucille” Monroe on May 1, 1883 in Bozeman. Charles died in 1932 (The Billings Gazette, 17 July 1932) Lucille Bridget (Monroe) Callaghan had been born November 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania. She lived in Gallatin County for 50 years and in Bozeman for 35 years (Independent-Record, 16 January 1934). Charles and Lucille were buried in the family plot in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Cornelius A. McIntyre purchased the property from Callaghan on March 23, 1915. Cornelius McIntyre had been born on February 2, 1887 in Huron County, Michigan to Alex and Catherine (O’Hanley) McIntyre. Cornelius married Annie McDonnell on November 17, 1915 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2016). Cornelius and his wife Annie did not own the property long; they sold it to A. T. Rutledge on April 6, 1917. Albert Thomas Rutledge was born on October 29, 1870 in Illinois to Rev. James Edward and Emma (Miller) Rutledge (Ancestry.com, 2001). Albert married Angela Lucy Hart on August 27, 1897 in Livermore, Maine. Angela “Gelia” Hart had been born on May 5, 1870 in Iowa to George and Ann (Tilson) Hart (Findagrave.com, 2004). Albert Rutledge owned the property briefly, then sold it to M. J. Hannam and E. J. Hines on September 7, 1917; they then sold it to Peter and Esther Zeier on December 12, 1917. Peter J. Zeier was born January 14, 1884 in Madison, Wisconsin. He moved to Roundup, Montana in 1910. He married Esther Baldwin in 1911 and the two of them settled in Bozeman in 1913 (The Montana Standard, 11 June 1961). They lived briefly in Seattle, Washington, from 1942 to 1952, after which they returned to Bozeman. Peter was a contractor and builder in Bozeman (Great Falls Tribune, 21 March 1962). Esther had been born October 18, 1891 in Mauston, Wisconsin. Peter and Esther were both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). John L. and Millie I. (Stine) Buehling purchased this property October 4, 1929. John Buehling was employed by the Northern Pacific railway from 1907 until his death in 1940. John Buehling died January 1, 1940 at the age of 49 years. Millie (Stine) Buehling had been born in Shell City, Missouri in 1892 to Marion and Mollie Stine. The Stine family came west in 1898, settling in Bozeman. In 1899 the family moved to Garneill, Montana and in 1902 to Ubet, Montana. They returned to Bozeman in 1907. Millie attended school in Bozeman and resided there the rest of her life. In 1965, writer Estelle C. Laughlin visited Millie, interviewed her and composed a first- person narrative called, “Missouri to Montana in a Covered Wagon 1898.” This writing details the Stine family’s trip west (The Great Falls Tribune, 18 April 1965). This document is in the Montana State University Library, in the Merrill G. Burlingame Special Collections. John and Millie had been married on October 11, 1911. After John’s death Millie married Albert E. Talboys (Archiveswest.com, 2007). Millie died on March 20, 1974. Millie and John were buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). After Millie Talboy’s death the property sold to Hiram Andrew Oleson and Hanora Evelyn McDougall and has been owned by various people since that time. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was recommended a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development.” Some changes have been made to the site since that time, including the addition of a large dormer on the east elevation. Regardless, Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. The site has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential historic district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with Progressive Phase of Bozeman’s development, representative of a transitional period in residential design influenced by Progressive ideology (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 501 W LAMME ST Site Number: 050 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site has experienced some alterations over time, including the replacement of original windows. More notably, a dormer was added to the east elevation of the building. These changes affect integrity of materials to some extent, and design. Other aspects are retained, sufficient to convey historic character.
