Architectural Description
Property Name: 15 S 8TH AVE Site Number: 030
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Education Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling converted to non-profit office space Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built prior to 1904, which is now being utilized as an educational center for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Gallatin County Office. It is a wood-framed single-story structure built in the Craftsman bungalow style. It has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is front gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding with wood shingles in the gable apex. Between 1912 and 1927 either the original
residence was torn down and a larger one replaced it, or the original residence was enlarged.
The primary façade is a gable end facing east onto S 8th Ave. The eave is slightly overhanging and supported by brackets. The primary entrance is off-center, to the north, accessed by a flight of wood steps. It consists of a modern steel paneled door with a fixed lite. Fixed sidelites flank the entry. On the south end of the façade is a large one-over-one-lite picture window with one-over-one-lite sidelites. Some of the original windows have been replaced but the openings are intact.
Windows present on the north elevation consist of two fixed shoulder-height windows, one at either end, and a paired and single one-over-one-lite single-hung window. Basement lites are also present, within the foundation wall. The south elevation has a similar window patter, with a mix of small and large sing-lite windows and basement lites. The west gable end was not visible from the public
ROW.
A prefab particle board shed is in the rear yard but does not appear to be historic. Vegetation around the property includes deciduous bushes in the front yard east of the house, and a large deciduous tree in the backyard northwest of the corner of the house. Overall, the site is in good condition. Metcalf finds that the modifications are minor, and the house retains sufficient integrity to
convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 15 S 8TH AVE Site Number: 030
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871.
Elias Story purchased the property on November 4, 1874 and sold it almost immediately to Ellen Story on November 14, 1874. On January 1, 1903 Ellen and Nelson Story sold the property to their son, Thomas Byron Story. Thomas Byron and wife Kate Story may have had the house built on this site, but soon sold the property to Hal M. Stewart on May 14, 1909. Hal M. Stewart purchased the property on May 14, 1909 but never lived here. He had been born in Monroe County, Ohio in 1875 and came to Bozeman, Montana in 1902. He practiced law while living in Bozeman and was a prominent Bozeman attorney. His brother
was S. V. Stewart, who served as Governor of Montana. Hal Stewart served Gallatin County as a member of the lower house of the legislative assembly in 1913. He held the rank of captain and was chief disbursing officer in Montana for the United States Army during the first World War. He was serving as the police judge in Bozeman when he died suddenly on May 18, 1932 in Helena, Montana of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in Helena to attend the democratic state convention (The Independent-Record, 18 May
1932). Judge William L. and Lalia H. Holloway purchased the property from Stewart on March 13, 1913. William Lawson Holloway had been born in Kirksville, Missouri on November 8, 1867. In 1891 he enrolled in the University of Michigan law school, receiving his degree in law. He moved to Bozeman in 1892 and opened a law office. In 1900, he was elected judge of the Ninth judicial district which at that time comprised of Gallatin, Broadwater, and Meagher counties. He also served as county attorney for Gallatin County
(The Independent-Record, 12 December 1926). William married Lalia Holmes on February 17, 1898 in Butte, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2017). Lalia Holmes had been born in Prairie City, Oregon on December 31, 1869 to Dr. and Mrs. L. E. Holmes. Her father, Dr. Holmes, was a prominent physician in Helena in the late 1870s, moving to Helena from Deer Lodge in 1875. He later moved to Butte, Montana and practiced medicine there for many years. After graduating from High School in Helena, Lalia attended
Wellesley college in Wellesley, Massachusetts. Upon her return to Helena she was a member of the Montana Wesleyan college faculty for a year. After her marriage to Judge Holloway the couple lived in Bozeman until they moved to Helena in 1901 (The
Independent-Record, 27 May 1923). They never resided in this residence. A. I. and Frank M. Lillard purchased the property on May 16, 1914. Wilbur J. and Jessie Templin purchased the property from the Lillards on October 18, 1919. Wilbur John Templin had been born on July 30, 1873 in Archer, Nebraska. Wilbur and his wife Jessie
are the first known residents to live in this house, along with Jessie’s sister, Mary Kyes. Wilbur worked at Montana State College. By 1940 the family was back in Nebraska. Wilbur Templin died on May 16, 1958 in Central City, Nebraska (Ancestry.com, 2010).
The Templin family sold the property to the Ella N. Talbott on September 15, 1925. Ella Krattcer had been born on November 29,
1886 in Salesville (now Gallatin Gateway), Montana to Samuel and Rachel Krattcer. She married James Talbott on March 1, 1911 in Bozeman, Montana. Ella and James lived in this residence until his death on July 19, 1935. Ella continued to live in the residence
until she sold the property on April 15, 1944 (Findagrave.com, 2004) to James D. and Ione Walker.
James and Ione Walker sold the property less than a month later to Albert Barnes and Iva Jewell Foster on May 10, 1944. Iva J. Littleton had been born on March 10, 1895 in Missouri to Thomas and Amanda Littleton. Iva married Albert B. Foster on September
9, 1933 in Livingston, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2017). Albert and Iva lived in this house while owning it. Albert worked as a clerk at The Arcade, which was a cocktail lounge, restaurant, and bowling alley located on Main Street in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Company,
1947). Albert Foster died on September 6, 1961 (Ancestry.com, 2001). Eva lived in the house a few more years, until she sold the property on September 16, 1965 to John Harold and Jacqueline Joy Gardner. The Gardners owned the property until June 19, 1967,
when they sold it to Rudolph H. and Rose Marie Hager. The Hagers sold the property on May 1, 1975 to Brian G. and Sheila M. Marler who in turn sold it to Frank and Rose Pratt on May 2, 1977. On November 1, 1982, the Big Brothers & Sisters of Gallatin Co
Inc. purchased the property; they are the current owners as of June 2020.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 15 S 8TH AVE Site Number: 030
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a gable-front bungalow house built prior to 1904, which is now being utilized as an educational center for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Gallatin County Office. Overall, the site is in good condition. Metcalf finds that the modifications made to the house over the years have been minor and that the site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The property has historic associations with prominent citizens of Bozeman, Hal M. Stewart, and Judge William Holloway. Stewart was a state legislator and served as a police judge; Judge Holloway served as county attorney for Gallatin County. However, the site does not reflect productive lives of these locally notable individuals, as neither resided nor worked here. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Story Addition in order to evaluate district potential.
