MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 811 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 041 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built sometime between 1904 and 1912. The house is a wood-framed, two story structure with characteristics of the Queen Anne style including its asymmetrical form and cross-gabled roof. It is a residential feature, but has stood vacant for some time; neglect has resulted in considerable deterioration of the exterior materials. The house has an irregular footprint with a concrete foundation. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding. The roof is clad in both asphalt and wood shingles, and a brick chimney topped with a metal stove pipe protrudes from the crux of the northern and western gables. The primary façade faces south onto W Babcock St. The primary entry is on the south façade, beneath a pedimented porch along the west side. The porch is recessed from the front of the house, which consists of a two-story gable front bay. The first story of the east bay has canted corners. Queen Anne ornament is present and includes scrolled hoods over the canted corners and decorative fan-like wood siding at the corners. The gable end contains a pair of original wood one-over-one-lite double-hung windows in the upper story. Similar windows are still present on the east and west elevations and in the apex of the north-facing gable on the rear elevation. Some of the original windows elsewhere on the building have been replaced, while original windows are in poor condition, absent, or broken. Window types include single hung and fixed. A porch was added to the west-side rear of the structure between 1927 and 1943 (Sanborn Map Company, 1904, 1912, 1927, and 1943), and contains a secondary entry, above grade and accessed by a wood stoop. The rear yard has been partially paved and is used for vehicle storage. Vegetation includes a row of bushes along the western edge of the property, a large mature deciduous tree to the east of the house, and deciduous bushes to the north of the house in the backyard. No other features are associated with the house or are on the property. Overall condition of the site is poor. The paint is failing, windows are damaged and broken, and dry rot was noted on the porch. The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district...[and] The historic integrity of this property has been retained due to the survival of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting, and location.” Despite its current condition, Metcalf finds it retains its character defining elements and has sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 811 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 041 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. Elias Story purchased the property on November 4, 1874 and sold it almost immediately to Ellen Story on November 14, 1874. On August 20, 1903, Ellen and Nelson Story sold the property to Walter Story. Walter Story sold the property to W. H. Stevens on November 21, 1904. The residence on this property was built between 1904 and 1912, possibly in late 1904 by W. H. Stevens. A porch added to westside rear of building between 1927 and 1943 (Sanborn Map Company, 1904, 1912, 1927 and 1943). W. H. and Mary Ellen Stevens sold the property to William D. Brock on November 30, 1904. William D. Brock lived in the residence on this property until he sold it and moved to Belgrade. Brock worked in real estate (R. L. Polk & Company, 1906, 1908). Brock sold the property to Loren R. Churchill on September 28, 1908. Hal M. Stewart purchased the property from Churchill on March 24, 1909 but never lived in the residence. He had been born in Monroe County, Ohio in 1875 and came to Bozeman, Montana in 1902. He practiced law while living in Bozeman and was a prominent Bozeman attorney. His brother was S. V. Stewart, a Governor of Montana. He served Gallatin County as a member of the lower house of the legislative assembly in 1913. He held the rank of captain and was chief disbursing officer in Montana for the United States Army during the first World War. He was police judge in Bozeman when he died suddenly on May 18, 1932 in Helena, Montana of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was in Helena to attend the democratic state convention (The Independent-Record, 18 May 1932). Stewart sold the property to Eva Mae Onslow on March 23, 1915. Eva and Charles Raymond Onslow lived in the residence during their ownership (R. L. Polk & Company, 1916, 1918). Raymond Onslow was a bookkeeper for the Commercial National Bank in Bozeman, Montana. By 1920 the Onslows had sold this property and moved to Billings, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2010). The Onslows sold the property to Patrick H. Gaffney on August 28, 1918. Gaffney sold the property to Henry L. McRoberts on July 25, 1919. In 1920 Henry McRoberts and his wife Mary were living in the residence (Ancestry.com, 2010). Henry had been a farmer but in 1920 was retired. Henry died in 1928 and Mary died the next year in 1929 (Findagrave.com, 2004). Hilda B. Strang purchased the property, after the death of the McRoberts, on August 11, 1930. Hilda Glaim had been born on April 4, 1879 in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. She came to Bozeman in 1916 (The Great Falls Tribune, 22 May 1953). Hilda lived in this residence from approximately 1940 to 1944 (R. L. Polk & Company, 1940, 1944). Hilda died in Bozeman on May 17, 1953 and is buried in the Salesville Cemetery in Gallatin Gateway, Montana (Findagrave.com, 2004). Hilda sold the property to Herman C. and Cora B. Skarie on August 1, 1945. Herman Skarie had been born in Hannaford, North Dakota. He attended business college in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He lived several years in Williston, North Dakota before coming to Montana. He married Cora Mae Boyd in Williston in 1911. While living in Bozeman he worked in insurance and was a realtor (The Montana Standard, 6 Jan 1964). While owning this house the Skarie’s lived at 206 S. Tracy Avenue in Bozeman. Eugene R. and Virginia D. Skarie took ownership of the property on August 14, 1957. Eugene was the son of Herman and Cora Skarie. The couple did not live in Bozeman; they lived in Baltimore, Maryland. Before her marriage, Virginia Skarie played the accordion on the concert stage and on the radio. She directed her own band which played in many of the large cities. She played classical and modern music (The Daily Inter Lake, 30 Dec 1951). The Skaries sold the property to Effie A. Chauner October 19, 1961. Effie Chauner had been born in Hendersonville, North Carolina. Effie married Walter F. Chauner on August 16, 1916 in Bozeman, Montana. Walter died in 1949 and Effie died in 1969 in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Ralph B. and Ethel Mae Hartin purchased the property on June 15, 1966 and sold it to George C. and Myrtle L. Amundson and Robert H. Henderson on November 4, 1968. The heirs of George C. Amundson all quit claimed their right in the property to Robert H. Henderson between 15 February 1974 and 03 June 1974 (See Gallatin County Deeds Film 24/76-79, 1045). Robert Henderson sold the property to Michaela Shyne on July 2, 1974. N. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 811 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 041 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district.” There appear to be no changes since this previous survey. The site is in poor condition overall, but Metcalf finds that it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has historic associations with affluent Bozeman residents; however, these associations have not been found to have significance. The site has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential historic district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Story Addition to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 811 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 041 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in poor condition, overall. Changes to the some of the original windows and openings, as well as the deterioration of the exterior materials affects integrity of material and design. However, most of the building’s character defining elements remain intact. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
