Architectural Description
Property Name: 819 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 045
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Mission - Spanish Revival If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A
This site consists of a single historical architectural feature: a house built in 1937. It appears to be vacant and has a separate basement apartment accessed by a small addition on the north elevation. The house is a single story, stucco building in the Spanish Revival style, and likely initially built as a single-family dwelling. It has a rectangular footprint with a concrete foundation. The roof is flat with a flat cornice and ornamental parapet. The primary entry faces south onto W Babcock St. The entry is centered on the façade, in a slightly projecting pay. The entry is above grade and accessed by a flight of steps that also accesses a raised wood deck that extends along the east half of the façade, and beyond the east elevation several feet. Beneath the wooden front steps can be seen the original concrete steps, which are pocked and spalling. The bays to the east and west of the front door both contain a one-over-one-lite single-hung window. The extreme east and west ends of the south façade have a slightly projecting pilaster, in line with the central projecting bay. A basement window is present in the foundation, directly below the doorway, obscured by the front deck. The west elevation has two aluminum framed one-over-one lite windows on the main story. The basement level has two above-grade rectangular windows; one of which has been replaced with a plexiglass pane. The small rectangular addition is on the north end of the elevation contains an exterior basement entrance, facing west. This door is a standard side-hung door at grade. The roof of this addition is pitched and covered in corrugated metal. The north and east elevations of the building were not able to be seen from the public ROW due to dense deciduous shrubs that grow along the house. The house is located on a corner lot. It has a slightly elevated lawn, planted with grass. Mature deciduous trees grow in the corresponding boulevard. This site was recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development.” Metcalf finds that despite some deterioration of materials, the site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 819 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 045
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This site was included in the area platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871.
Elias Story purchased the property on November 4, 1874 and sold it almost immediately to Ellen Story on November 14, 1874. Elias Story Jr. purchased the property on July 29, 1889 from Ellen and Nelson Story and then sold it back to them on August 1, 1889. On August 20, 1903, Ellen and Nelson Story sold the property to Walter Story. Walter Story failed to pay the $1,028.35 in taxes assessed in 1921 and lost the property to Gallatin County (D: 63/418). O. E. Sheppard purchased the property on December 7, 1936 from Gallatin County. Oden Elbridge Sheppard had been born on July
15, 1892 in Missouri to C. W. and Dora Musgrave Sheppard (Ancestry.com, 2014). Dr. Sheppard was a professor at Montana State College, in the Department of Chemistry, from 1922 until he retired in 1946. He died a year after he retired at his fruit farm in Bliss, Idaho (The Montana Standard, 14 September 1947).
Malcolm Nickey purchased the property on January 3, 1938 from O. E. and Dorothy Sheppard. John Malcolm Nickey married Louise Kellams in July of 1938. Malcolm worked as a carpenter and Louise worked as a housekeeper (Ancestry.com, 2012). Vincent Nickey purchased the property on February 11, 1938 from Malcolm Nickey. Mary Margaret Sheppard purchased the property on May 29, 1939 from Vicent Nickey. Mary Margaret Sheppard was the daughter of Oden and Dorothy Sheppard who had previously owned the property. Mary Margaret had been born in Chanute, Kansas on November 15, 1917. In 1921 she moved with her family to
Bozeman, Montana because her father, Oden Sheppard, had taken a job with Montana State College. Mary Margaret attended Montana State University (in Missoula, The Montana Almanac: 1957), receiving a degree in nursing in 1942. She worked as a nurse the rest of her life. She died on October 10, 1991 in Tucson, Arizona (Arizona Daily Star, 16 October 1991).
Reetha Hufford purchased the property from Mary Margaret Sheppard on June 9, 1941. Reetha Hanks had been born on September 22, 1894 at Nye, Montana. She married John Hufford in 1912; he died in the 1920s. She came to Bozeman in 1937 where she operated
an apartment house. She moved to Billings, MT in the 1940s (The Billings Gazette, 7 November 1969). Maggie Gertrude Bradshaw purchased the property on July 29, 1944 and sold it on June 22, 1945 to Frances M. and Albert N. Haas.
Frances Marie Swanson was born on October 21, 1901 in Montana to Alex and Jenny Swanson in Bridger Canyon, MT. She attended schools in Bridger and Bozeman and the Butler School of Cosmetology in Spokane, Washington. She married Albert Haas on April
29, 1935 in Bozeman. Frances operated a beauty shop in Bozeman for several years (The Billings Gazette, 16 November 1983). Albert N. Haas was- born on July 29, 1902 in Helena, Montana to John Michael and Kathleen O’Bannon Haas. He graduated from
Townsend High School in Townsend, Montana. He attended the University of Utah and then went on to attend the Law Enforcement Officers Training School at the University of Montana. On October 7, 1937 he became an officer of the Bozeman Police Department.
In 1944 he was appointed Chief of Police in Bozeman and served for thirteen years in that capacity. He retired from law enforcement and was employed by the Credit Bureau of Bozeman until he retired in 1983 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 9 October 1994).
Edward A. and Edith P. Jensen purchased the property from Haas on February 10, 1951 and sold it on July 6, 1951 to William S. and
Juanita Stutsman.
William Stutsman was born on September 15, 1903 in Mandan, North Dakota to William and Ada Stutsman. He grew up in Mandan and then attended North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo, North Dakota. He worked as a care-giver most of his career. During
the second World War he served as field director at several military bases. After the war he was a case worker in North Dakota for county welfare boards. William came to Bozeman in 1950, working for the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce. On December 22, 1950
William married Juanita Robbins. William died in 1995 (The Billings Gazette, 4 February 1995). Juanita Robbins had been born on November 15, 1917 in Lewistown, Montana to Ray and Zula Robbins (Ancestry.com, 2017). Juanita died on January 25, 2000
(Findagrave.com, 2004).
The Stutsmans sold the property to Michael J. Schlegel on May 1, 1978. Schlegel sold the property to Mitchell Aaron Reed on September 15, 1978. Reed sold the property to Larry G. Blackwood and Constance C. Relien on February 25, 1983; they then sold the
property to William Sebena on October 9, 1984.

William J. “Bill” Sebena was born on October 29, 1919 in Butte, Montana to George and Mary Sebena. After graduating from high school Bill built Wimpy’s Palace in Butte, one of the country’s first drive-ins to have outside speakers and carhops. Bill joined the Army during the second World War and was stationed in Paris, Texas. Bill was an excellent chef, and everyone loved his ice cream and sweet rolls. He eventually moved to Bozeman and purchased the Siesta Motel at 824 West Main Street. He demolished the Siesta Motel after operating it for about one year and built the Lewis and Clark Motel in its place. The Lewis and Clark Motel opened in 1978 and is often remembered as being the fanciest motel in town at the time. He rented rooms in the Lewis and Clark for over $80 a
night in the 1980s. The restaurant in the motel was its centerpiece and Bill cooked in the restaurant (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 7 June 2008). The William Sebena estate transferred this property his daughter, Lisa Sebena, on August 19, 2013. Lisa Sebena is the current owner as of March 2020.

Statement of Significance
Property Name: 819 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 045
NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was considered a “contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman’s
historic/architectural development.” Metcalf finds that despite some deterioration of materials, the site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is
not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Nationalization Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). Infill projects were commons in this phase, introducing new styles and property types, like apartment buildings, into previously established residential neighborhoods. Many of these newer homes were
economically built, but “blended well in scale and siting with their older neighbors” (RTI 2008: 34). The site is representative of the Mission style, which had first become popular in bungalows and apartment buildings in the 1920s. Modernized elements, such as the streamlined smooth appearance of the ornament, including the parapet, illustrate later influences on the style. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Story Addition to evaluate district potential.

Integrity

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) Overall, this site is in fair condition. Deterioration of the exterior materials is apparent. The replacement wood steps and front deck are also deteriorating, with failed paint and dry rot present. Some original windows have been replaced, though the original openings appear to be intact. Despite these minor affects to integrity of materials, the site retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.
