ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Law office Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: E. L. Bartholomew Company/City/State: Bozeman, Montana Source of Information: NRHP nomination form
The property at 504 W. Main consists of one historic architectural feature: a one-and-a half-story bungalow built as a single-family residence in or around 1914. It exhibits many distinctive Craftsman style elements and is within the Cooper Park Historic District, which was designated in 1987. Now used as a law office, the building is located on a corner lot, and is a wood-frame, gable-roof structure, with a rectangular footprint. A single-story gable roofed wing at the rear of the house lengthens the footprint of the building. The foundation is concrete, and has been faced with a plaster or stucco material, the siding is horizontal wood clapboards, and the roof is clad with asphalt shingles. The building is oriented with the primary façade on the north elevation. The entry is above grade, and an open front porch spans the front of the house, supported by paired squat and tapered columns with simple bases, set on tapered concrete pedestals. The steps are centered on the façade, and have concrete or stuccoed cheek-walls. The slope of the roof above the porch has exposed rafter-tails. A front-gable with four six-over-one-lite double hung windows extends from the upper story roof, and the gable peak is clad with wood shingles. As is typical for Craftsman style buildings, the wood brackets and rafter-tails are exposed. The first floor windows are largely original, with the exception of the front façade window and the door which have been replaced within the existing openings. The east elevation has an ADA-compliant ramp along most of the lower wall, allowing access to the east end of the front porch. Near the porch opening is a double-hung, modern aluminum storm window within the original opening. Off-center on the east elevation, a shed roof with exposed rafter tails and wood brackets projects over a shallow bay. Contained in the bay is a triplet window with a wide fixed-lite between two narrower side windows. Two double-hung windows, with modern aluminum storm panels, are paired near the southern end of the east elevation. A smaller original window is set at the south end of the elevation. The second story is symmetrical with two double-hung six-over-one-lite windows centered under the gable peak and a smaller six-lite window at the north and the south ends of the elevation, each with a bracket placed on the outside vertical casing. The gable peak is clad in wood shingles and has a bracket it the apex. The single-story extension at the rear of the east elevation is narrower than the main house, which creates an L-shaped angle. Although not original to the house this part has been sympathetically designed. The long east elevation of the extension has a single one-over-one lite double hung window at the north end by the angle with the main house, and two sets of paired one-over-one lite double hung windows. The southernmost pair is protected by a slight extension of the roof line at the end of the elevation. The south elevation is dominated by the gable-end of the extension, which contains a wide shallow bay with a triplet window protected by a rafter tailed shed roof supported by wood brackets. The gable peak above is clad with wood shingles. The main house has a back stairs entering into a projecting vestibule on the east end of the south elevation. Two casement windows are between the vestibule and the extension. A shed-roofed dormer extends from the center of the roof above. The west elevation was not visible from the ROW. This site is currently listed as a contributing feature of the Cooper Park Historic District. Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character and maintain its listed status.

History of Property
Property Name: 504 W MAIN ST Site Number: 068
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is part of the Story Addition, platted on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ Section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871.
Fellows D. Pease purchased the property from Nelson Story on July 16, 1872. John Parkhurst and C. L. Patterson/Pattison purchased the property from Pease on April 10, 1876. William H. Martin and Alfred Meyers (Martin & Meyers) purchased the property from Parkhurst and Patterson on December 20, 1877. Elizabeth B. Hoffman, the wife of Charles Hoffman, purchased the property on January 28, 1880 from Martin and Meyers. Lavantia Pease, the daughter of Fellows Pease, purchased the property from the Hoffmans on September 10, 1882. Thomas Lewis purchased the property from Pease on July 25, 1887.
Joanna Woolverton purchased the property from Lewis on July 1, 1902. Joanna and William Woolverton sold the property to Alford L. Yergey on May 1, 1906. Yergey sold the property to H. S. Buell on November 17, 1909. H. S. and Olive M. Buell sold the property to Clyde Corbly on April 22, 1911. Clyde and Laura D. Corbly sold the property to the First Church of Christ Scientist on July 22,
1911. William C. and Eva Smith purchased this property from the First Church of Christ Scientist on February 2, 1912. William and Eva Smith sold the property to Oral Jones on May 29, 1914. Oral Jones sold the property to Hiram Fred and Martha West on May 29, 1915. The residence was designed and constructed for them by Bartholomew and Smith. Elmer Bartholomew, one of the most significant builders in Bozeman at this time, likely collaborated with another local builder, William C. Smith, to build this home for
the owners. Eva Smith, William’s wife, was the daughter of Elmer Bartholomew. This is one of three houses in the area that were built by Bartholomew, including 522 S. 6th Avenue, 705 S. 6th Avenue, and 519 W. Babcock Street (Montana Historical and Architectural Inventory).
West was an undertaker and co-owned the Davis & West undertaking business located at 125 W. Main Street from approximately 1914 to 1920. In 1920, West went on his own, continuing in the undertaking business at 125 W. Main while also becoming the
Gallatin County Coroner (R. L. Polk & Company, 1912 – 1929). In 1928 Hiram and Martha moved to Long Beach, California, where West continued to practice undertaking in association with the Baker & West Mortuary (Long Beach Independent, 19 September 1956).
Anna C. Aakjer purchased the property from Hiram and Martha West on March 1, 1928. Anna was born on May 12, 1883 in Paris, Missouri to John Anderson and Mary (Thompson) Anderson. Anna married John Aakjer in 1905. John Aakjer, born in Denmark,
came to Bozeman in 1901. John served as Gallatin County Commissioner. John died in 1955 at this residence (The Montana Standard, 4 January 1955) and Anna died at this residence on December 31, 1959 (Findagrave.com, 2004). The children, Harold G. Aaker, J.
Herbert Aaker, and Mary Margaret Aakjer McCulloch received the property, the brothers selling their interest to sibling Margaret. Note that both brothers changed their names from Aakjer to Aaker.
Margaret McCulloch received the property on April 19, 1960. Margaret Aakjer , born in 1909 to John and Anna Aakjer, married
Robert McCulloch in 1931 (Ancestry.com, 2016). Margaret died on March 6, 1969 in Helena, Montana. After Margaret’s death the property transferred to her husband, Robert McCulloch. Robert, born in Clarissa, Montana in 1908, was a World War II Army Air
Forces veteran, and died in Phoenix, Arizona in 1995 (Arizona Republic, 24 January 1995).
Robert McCulloch’s estate conveyed the property to Amalgamated Enterprises, LLC on March 2, 1995 who sold it to SLO Property, LLC on August 31, 2016. SLO Property, LLC is the current owner as of March 2020.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. An undated addition was done with great attention to the detail and the design of the original structure, and does not detract from the integrity. Replacement of some of the windows makes a slight diminishment in the feeling, but the original openings have not been altered. The aspects of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association
are intact. Metcalf finds that the site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. .
