MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 508 W MAIN ST Site Number: 069 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Architecture office Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A The property at 508 W. Main consists of one historic architectural feature: a structure built in about 1934 as a single-family residence in the Craftsman style. It is included as a contributing element within the Cooper Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It has been converted from use as a single family residence to use as commercial office space. A plain building, it is a single-story, wood-frame structure with a rectangular foot-print and an asymmetrical cross-gable roof. A significant gable –roofed addition has been added to the south end of the house. The foundation is concrete block in some areas, and poured concrete under the back and front additions. The roof is clad with asphalt shingles, and the exterior walls of the front section of the building are clad in vinyl or painted metal sheets with visible attaching hardware. The remaining exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding, including the extensive addition on the south elevation. The primary elevation faces north, with a gable-front extension nested at the east end under the upper front-facing gable of the façade. Extending from the west side of the nested gable projection is an open porch under a hipped-roof supported by metal posts, at the west end of the façade. Wood brackets typical of the Craftsman style support the eves of both gables. The entry is above-grade, with open wooden steps with red-painted metal railings that continue as railings for the open-sided porch. The front door is on the west-facing side of the lower gable-front extension. Two modern one-over-one-lite awning windows have replaced the original widows, and the openings have been altered. A similar modern one-over-one-lite awning replacement window is on the façade under the covering porch roof. The porch is built out over empty space, and supported by squared wooden blocks. Basement windows are visible in the foundation shaded by the porch floor. The east elevation is dominated by the gable end of the cross-gable roofline, in which, close to the corner with the north elevation, is set a modern one-over-one-lite awning window. This part of the structure is supported on squared wooden blocks, and the basement windows underneath are visible. A deck and an above-grade entry are set on the side of the original south end of the east elevation. An attached single-story gable-roofed addition extends flush with the original exterior of the east elevation, and contains a modern window in the south end, and open wooden steps that lead to the above-grade side door located within the original part of the building. Metal railings enclose this side deck and the angle with the original southeast corner of the elevation, in which a replacement window is set. Peaking from above the addition is the original gable-end of the bungalow, with a wooden bracket still found in the apex. The west elevation is relieved only by a modern window set very close to the south corner of the exterior, and the covered, open front porch at the north corner with the façade. All window openings have been altered throughout, and nearly all distinctive Craftsman elements have been lost. It is included as a contributing element within the Cooper Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It has since been converted from use as a single family residence to use as commercial office space. Alterations to the property have been extensive, and all original windows have been replaced with modern windows, set within remade openings and chosen from non-sympathetic options. An extensive addition has been grafted onto the rear of the building, obscuring and erasing the original structure and footprint. The aspects of design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling have been affected by the changes to the siding, the windows, and by an off-scale addition. Only the aspects of location and association are unscathed. Metcalf finds the site to have lost enough integrity to convey its historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 508 W MAIN ST Site Number: 069 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This property is part of the Story Addition, platted on June 18, 1872. The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. Fellows D. Pease purchased the property on July 16, 1872. John Parkhurst and C. L. Patterson/Pattison purchased the property from Pease on April 10, 1876. William H. Martin and Alfred Meyers (Martin & Meyers) purchased the property from Parkhurst and Patterson on December 20, 1877. Elizabeth B. Hoffman, the wife of Charles Hoffman, purchased the property on January 28, 1880 from Martin and Meyers. Lavantia Pease, the daughter of Fellows Pease, purchased the property from the Hoffmans on September 10, 1882. Thomas Lewis purchased the property from Pease on July 25, 1887. There was an earlier residence built on this property prior to 1891 (Sanborn Map Company, July 1890, November 1891). It was demolished between 1927 and 1943 according to the Sanborn Fire Insurance maps. This new residence was probably built in 1934 based on sewer connection records which list “D.T. Powell – October 1934” also says, “new sewer, 1934.” Joanna Woolverton died intestate on January 22, 1907, leaving three heirs – W. W. Woolverton (her husband), and her two sons, George L. Woolverton and Eugene L. Woolverton. Each received 1/3 interest in her real estate. At the time of her death, she owned the W10’ of Lot 2, all of Lot 3, and E 10’ Lot 4 and Lot 5 and the W 20’ of Lot 4 in Block E Story’s Addition, along with other lots.(Ancestry.com, 2015). On March 20, 1908 Joanna Woolverton’s two sons George and Eugene Woolverton sold their portions of the property to William Woolverton, the husband of Joanna Woolverton. William Woolverton sold the property to Kate P. Calvin in April of 1909. Calvin quickly sold the property to William C. Smith on November 15, 1909. William C. Smith, a carpenter, lived in the residence on the property at that time from 1909 to 1913 (R. L. Polk & Company, 1910, 1912). Smith sold the property to I. V. Schnebly on March 19, 1913. Schnebly sold the property to A. J. Cowan on July 26, 1913. A. J. Cowan and J. L. Cowan (guardian of Laura A. Cowan, wife of A. J.) sold the property to David T. Powell on February 1, 1918. David T. Powell, born in 1866 in Bettyville, Kentucky to John S. and Minerva Johnson Powell, came to the Gallatin valley in 1886 and farmed in the area until he retired (The Billings Gazette, 13 October 1945). Powell married Clara A. Remington in 1895 in Bozeman, Montana. Clara Melton, born in 1858 in Indiana to Amos and Harriett Yarde Melton, came to Montana Territory in 1864 as a child with her parents on a wagon train. They passed the present site of Bozeman on their way to Virginia City, and Clara remembered later in life that Bozeman “was marked by a single log cabin.” Two years later the family came back and settled in the Gallatin valley where she lived the rest of her life (The Montana Standard, 19 November 1940). She married Austin Remington in 1875 in Bozeman, Montana, and Remington died in 1891 (Findagrave.com, 2004), and Powell was her second husband. Clara died in 1940 and David in 1945 of an accident. He was struck by a car while crossing an intersection near his house on Lamme Street and died a short time later at the hospital (The Billings Gazette, 13 October 1945). David Powell was likely the original owner of this residence, but it is unclear if he and Clara ever lived in the house. The house was listed as vacant in 1935 (R. L. Polk & Company, 1935). David is living at 421 W. Lamme Street at the time of his death in 1945 (Ancestry.com, 2017). There was a quit claim deed from David Powell to Earl Walton on September 3, 1938. Earl Walton was the son of Minnie and Alburn Walton. He in Kentucky in 1899, Earl served in the Marine Corps during the World War I. Earl Walton married Georgia Benepe on July 26, 1953 in Carpinteria, California. . Earl was Gallatin County treasurer for 20 years and was elected as Gallatin County Clerk and Recorder in 1962, retiring in 1964 (The Montana Standard, 2 August 1967). He was a commander of Gallatin Post 14 for the American Legion, secretary of the Bozeman Elks Lodge, and a member of the Scottish Rite bodies of Livingston, Gallatin Masonic Lodge No. 6, and the Eagles Lodge. They lived at 15 West Koch Street. Georgia worked in the office of the president of Montana State College (The Montana Standard, 16 August 1953). Walton quit claimed the deed back to the Estate of David T. Powell on April 8, 1946. The property transferred to 27 relatives (including spouses) of David Powell’s. All these relatives named in David Powell’s probate transferred the property to Daniel Kilbride on November 18, 1946. Kilbride owned the property until January 8, 1948 when he sold it to J. Tom and Elisabeth McCusker. Tom and Elisabeth lived in the residence during their ownership. The McCuskers sold the property to John P. and Gertrude H. Braaksma on May 20, 1953. John Braaksma, born on June 11, 1922 in Bozeman, Montana to Joe Braaksma Senior and Jennie Klaver Braaksma, grew up in Manhattan, MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 508 W MAIN ST Site Number: 069 Montana. He enlisted in the army and served in the European Theater of Operations in the World War II. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart medal. He returned to the Gallatin valley and married Gertrude Heys in 1948 in Churchill, Montana. He worked for New York Life Insurance Company for many years (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 2 December 1990). He died on November 30, 1990 (Findagrave.com, 2004). The Braaksmas owned the property until October 12, 1988 when they sold the property to Chris and Gretchen Saboda. Chris and Gretchen Saboda transferred interest in the property via a quick claim deed to Bangtail Properties, LLC on March 15, 2019. Bangtail Properties, LLC is the current owner as of March 2020. Metcalf recommends that, due to substantial alteration to the property, it is no longer eligible for inclusion in the NRHP and that it be re-evaluated and considered a non-contributing element within the Cooper Park Historic District.
