MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 516 W MAIN ST Site Number: 071 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify: Property Type: Residence Specific Property Type: Multi-unit dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A The property at 516 W. Main St consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in ca. 1910. Listed in 1987 as a contributing feature within the Cooper Park Historic District, the site is a wood-framed, one-and-a-half-story, residential property with an asymmetrical cross-gabled roof, built in a late Queen Anne style with a hint of Classical Revival in the treatment of the gables. Essentially rectangular in foot-print, the foundation appears to be faced with concrete, the exterior of the house is clad in wood horizontal siding, and the many-gabled roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The gable ends are clad with a complex pattern of wood shingles, consisting of alternating rows of wolf-tooth, square, scalloped, and horizontal shingles. The primary façade faces north with a projecting first story bay under a nested gable. At the west end of the façade is a projecting bay window. The hipped porch roof has two decorative gables facing north. The open porch is supported by tapered round columns with simple capitals and square plinths. A side-angled, squared bay window with modern aluminum windows forms the east corner of the façade. The entry door is slightly off-centered to the east, and is above-grade. Three modern aluminum windows have replaced the originals of the bay-window that projects at the west end of the façade. Centered in the upper front- facing gable are three identical three-over-one lite original windows. A two-stall garage addition with a double bay sliding door is set well back at the southwest corner, accessed by the driveway that skirts the west elevation. The east elevation contains the wrap-around porch which overhangs the angled bay corner window at the north end. A small window is set high on the wall just south of the porch and a tall window with fixed lites is off-centered under the paired sash windows in the gable on the second story. A rear porch with turned columns supporting the roof is tucked into the southeast corner of the elevation. At the south elevation the house becomes more complex. A hipped roof one-story addition is tall enough to obscure the paired windows centered in the upper-story gable-end and clip the bottom corner of a small window close to the eaves. It spans the full width of the original building. A small porch is inset at the east corner, and there is a rear entry door at the west end of the addition. Abutting the southwest corner of the south elevation is a single-story clapboard-sided shed-roofed garage with two one-over-one-lite modern aluminum windows. The corrugated metal roof has parapets on east and west sides. The west façade contains the corner of the primary façade porch that protects the projecting bay window, and paired one-over-one-lite windows with modern aluminum storms between two small windows with fixed lites. The upper story side-gable has centered paired one-over-one-lite windows with modern aluminum storms within the original openings and a pedimented peak. To the south of the gable-roofed dormer is a shed-roofed dormer with exposed rafter-tails and a pair of double-hung windows. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing feature of the Cooper Park Historic District. Metcalf finds the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 516 W MAIN ST Site Number: 071 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in excellent condition, overall. A rear addition done many years ago, and the garage additon, which attaches to it, have altered the design at the rear and west side elevations. The alterations are not overwhelming to the site due to the locations in relation to the dominant structure. Most original windows have been replaced on the ground floor, but the original openings are intact. On the upper story the original windows and openings are intact. The window alterations detract from the integrity of feeling. The site has retained the aspects of location, setting, materials, workmanship, and association, and the aspects of feeling and design are only slightly diminished. Metcalf finds the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
