MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 520 W MAIN ST Site Number: 072 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Craftsman If Other, specify: Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Mixed-use Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A The property at 520 W. Main St consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in ca. 1932 with two obvious additions. A hexagonal turreted single-story addition extends in the front, and a later garage is attached at the rear. Listed in 1987 as a contributing feature within the Cooper Park Historic District, the one-and-a-half story building is described as built in a “Picturesque: Queen Anne/Craftsman style”. Details of the house are rather more predominantly Craftsman in design; the hexagonal front addition is the only element that could at a stretch be Queen Anne derived. The property was built as a single-family residence and has been converted to mixed use commercial/residential purposes. The building is wood-framed, clad in horizontal wood siding, and has a foundation veneered with concrete material. The footprint is irregular, with a hexagonal addition at the west end of the primary façade, and rear addition. The original side-gabled roof has jerkinhead gable-ends and kicked eaves, and is clad in asphalt shingles. The hexagonal part has a turret roof, and is clad with asphalt shingles. The cement block addition that has been grafted to the rear of the house has a flat roof covered in what looks to be rolled roofing. The primary façade is the north elevation, and is dominated by the hexagonal addition on the west half of the elevation. A sidewalk divides to approach two separate above-grade entrance doors, one in the west end turreted addition, and the other to the original entry door in the recessed small open porch at the east. A basement access stair is defined by a wrought iron railing at the ground level beside the above-grade front door, by the east corner of the building. A shed-roofed overhang projects to cover the main entry and is cut at an angle on the west to bridge the different roof-lines of the original house and the hexagonal addition. A squared wood post with a railing is at the top of the front steps. East of the door a canted wall contains an original six vertical-over-one-lite window. The door itself is a solid panel wood door with no window. The projecting hexagonal portion has concrete steps with cheek-walls leading to the door which is set in the north-facing wall. Each angled wall contains a six-vertical-over-one-lite window. Under these windows are basement windows set in the concrete foundation. The basement windows and two of the first-story windows on the façade are in original condition, and one has a modern aluminum storm. On the roof above the door a wooden snow-catcher has been placed. The east elevation contains the turreted addition on the north, the east facing angle of which has an original six vertical -over-one-lite window with a modern aluminum storm window applied. Further south on the east gable end, three original windows are spaced along the first-story, under a centered pair of three-over-one-lite windows on the second-story. The overhang of the jerkinhead gable is deep. A side door is in a recessed section under a shed-roofed overhang on the original structure, just north of the hyphenated joining of the original structure and the concrete block rear addition. The single-story, flat-roofed addition was likely constructed as a small business or workshop, and contains three large fixed-lite windows and a door. The south elevation of the original structure is largely obscured by the flat-roofed addition. The addition contains the openings that have been infilled. The east and west sides of the roof have stepped parapets. The second-story of the original house has a red-brick chimney deteriorating above the ridgeline, and a shed-roofed dormer centered on the roof. A deep overhang protects the two original 3 vertical-over-one-lite windows, and the infilled third window. The east and west ends of the roofline terminate in jerkin-head overhangs. The west elevation was not easily visible but does display the same fenestration pattern and type of windows as that described on the east elevation. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing feature of the Cooper Park Historic District. Alterations to the property occurred within the historic period and were noted in the original site documentation by James R. McDonald Architects. Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey that character.
