Architectural Description
Property Name: 612 W MAIN ST Site Number: 078
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Colonial Revival If Other, specify: Dutch Colonial Revival Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Residential converted to retail Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a wood-framed, two-story house built c. 1906. The site, listed as a contributing feature of 24GA953, the Cooper Park Historic District, in 1987, is a Dutch Colonial style house converted to use as a commercial retail space. This alteration has affected its appearance very little. The house has a rectangular footprint and a concrete foundation. The roof is a front-facing gambrel roof with a shed-roofed dormer along the west elevation. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles, while
the exterior walls are clad in a combination of horizontal wood siding and wood shingle in the upper story. Most of the original windows remain intact and consist of six-over-six-lite wood windows. However, windows on the northwest corner appear to be mid-
century alterations, with large fixed sash. The primary façade faces north onto W Main St. The entrance is centered on the façade, beneath a projecting pediment. The pediment is supported at the northeast and northwest corners by free-standing square posts. The entry is accessed by a flight of concrete steps.
To the east and west of the door is a three-lite sidelite. The door itself contains a 12-lite window. Further west of the entry is a large non-original nine-lite fixed window. At the east end of the façade is a small divided-lite window at shoulder height. The north façade’s upper story contains two six-over-six-lite windows with applied shutters. Centered in the apex of the gable is an arched louvered vent with a decorative wood keystone.
The west elevation contains a nine-lite fixed window at the north end, on the first story. Near center on the elevation is a projecting
box bay that contains a double-hung window, and another is located at the south end of the elevation. In the upper story, the shed-roofed dormer contains two pairs of six-over-six-lite windows with applied shutters. The house’s rear (south) elevation is accessible by an alley that runs east-west behind the property. There is a secondary entry located
on the south elevation, west of center. This entry is a non-original sliding glass door, accessed by a raised wood deck that spans the east half of the elevation. The deck has a set of steps, set at an angle, and a wood railing. To the east of the sliding glass doors is a two-lite sliding window, also not original. In the upper story is a pair of six-over-six-lite windows with applied shutters. In the apex of the gable is a rectangular louvered vent. The house has a concrete chimney that extends along the east slope of the roof. The east elevation was obscured from view in the public ROW by mature coniferous tree in the northeast corner of the lot.
The rear of the lot is paved for parking, with access to the rear alley. A small one-bay flat-roofed garage was attached to the rear side of the home between 1912 and 1927, but was removed at an unknown date. Currently, no garage is present. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as a contributing feature within the Cooper Park Historic District. Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character and maintain its listed status.

History of Property
Property Name: 612 W MAIN ST Site Number: 078
HISTORY OF PROPERTY This area was platted as the Story Addition on June 18, 1872.The United States General Land Office issued a patent to William H. Tracy for the S ½ of NE ¼ section 12, T2S R5E on June 15, 1872. Tracy, likely anticipating the issuance of that patent, had sold the land to Nelson Story on November 18, 1871. On August 20, 1903, Ellen and Nelson Story sold the property to their daughter, Rose Story Hogan, on October 4, 1902. Rose Story Hogan sold the property to The Kenyon Noble Lumber Company on April 5, 1912.
Carlisle S. Kenyon purchased the property from the Kenyon Nobel Lumber Company for $1,000 on May 22, 1912. The residence on this property was built in c. 1912 for Carlisle Kenyon, who was the son of Squire C. Kenyon, one of the founders of the Kenyon-Noble Lumber Company. Kenyon had been born on November 29, 1886 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On February 14, 1912 Carlisle married Grace Earhart in Bozeman, Montana (Ancestry.com, 2016). They moved into this house not long after their wedding. Grace Earhart had been born on January 5, 1887 in Crooksville, Missouri to Edward and Rosa Earhart. She came to Bozeman with her
parents in 1901 (Great Falls Tribune, 25 January 1950). In 1922 Carlisle Kenyon took control of the family company and ran it until the 1950s. He was active in the business until 1966 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 1 July 1967). The Kenyon Noble Company is still in business as of June 2020 and currently has stores in
Bozeman, Belgrade, and Livingston (Kenyonnoble.com). Grace Kenyon died in 1950 and Carlisle Kenyon died on September 14, 1972. They were buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, Montana (Findagrave.com, 2004). Carlisle Kenyon lived in this residence with Grace until her death in 1950. William “Bill” V. Ogle purchased the property on May 2, 1951, shortly after the death of Grace Kenyon. By 1954 William Ogle and
his wife Louisa were living in the residence. William V. Ogle had married Katherine Kenyon, the daughter of Carlisle and Grace Kenyon, on November 2, 1938 in Bozeman, Montana. William and Katherine lived in Bozeman, where William worked as a salesman for Kenyon Noble Company. Katherine died suddenly less than two years later in 1940 of influenza. William married Louisa Hageman in 1941. After Carlisle Kenyon retired, Bill Ogle became the sole owner of Kenyon Noble. Bill and Louisa’s sons, Bill Jr.
and Rich Ogle, took over the Kenyon Noble business in the 1980s (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 18 June 2016). Bill Sr. was very active in the Bozeman community and was instrumental in starting Bozeman’s Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. He also was
involved in the fundraising and development of Bridger Bowl and Big Sky ski resorts (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 15 August 2006). William and Louisa Ogle lived in this residence until c.1976 (R. L. Polk & Company, 1976, 1977). The residence, which is now used as a commercial property, is still owned by the Ogle family. Penny Ogle, the daughter of William
and Louisa Ogle, took ownership on August 29, 2016 and is the current owner as of February 2020.

The site was listed as a contributing feature of the Cooper Park Historic District (24GA953) in 1987 and is a Dutch Colonial style house converted to use as a commercial retail space. It was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects, at which time it was recommended contributing to the district. Minor alterations have been made to the site. The windows on the northwest corner have been replaced with modern windows, affecting historic character, especially as they are so prominent on the most visible façade; however, Metcalf finds the site is in excellent condition and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character and retain its NRHP-listed status. This site is currently listed in the NRHP as contributing to the Cooper Park Historic District and retains integrity sufficient to maintain its listed status.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) Alterations to the windows on the northwest corner affect historic character, especially as they are so prominent on the most visible facade. This affects integrity of materials somewhat, and integrity of design. The condition and retention of the majority of the historic fabric goes a long way to compensate. Overall, the site is in excellent condition and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic
character.
