Subject:Ordinance 2055; re Pole Yard URD

To the Members of the Bozeman City Commission:
In the weeks since the Bozeman City Commission approved a designation of
Blight for the Pole Yard site a significant reaction from a trusted local
government entity was released: the City/County Board of Health issued a
letter, dated October 22, asking for a delay in the establishment of a URD for
this property. It explains the need for the City to first acknowledge and answer
questions regarding the uses of the property and to establish development
protocols in order to ensure environmental and human safety. The Board of
Health provides a lengthy list of business and development uses that would be
prohibited on such a site for safety reasons, and reminds the Commission that
the City will be responsible for installing and maintaining sewer and water
infrastructure that could ultimately contaminate the East Gallatin River, among
other risks.
I earnestly support the Board of Health’s recommendation to take additional
time to address critical environmental and human health issues before creating
the URD. I urge the Commission to do its homework on behalf of the
community at large, to acknowledge its awesome responsibility to protect
citizens and resources, and to proceed with caution and due diligence. The
creation of a URD at this property at this time is premature.
Sincerely,
Lisa Easton
