Madam Mayor and Commissioners,
I served for eleven years on the Gallatin City/County Board of Health as a city appointee. During that
time the board was provided with multiple updates and opportunities for discussion by the EPA on
the Idaho Pole Super Fund Site. During the recent delisting of a large portion of the site EPA’s
project manager Roger Hoogerheide stated on several occasions that the push for delisting was
coming from the EPA in Washington and the current administration. My concern is that the anti-
science stance of the current administration could be overturned by a more cautious incoming
administration and result in a reversal of the delisting.
In addition, any development’s demand for infrastructure, especially sewer and water, will provide
ample opportunity for contaminated water to be transported along pipeline bedding material off
site to other parts of the city. The debacle of the subdivision approved below the old land fill and
the subsequent expense to city taxpayers should serve as a lesson for this very situation. The
timetable to correct these types of environmental train wrecks is not and should not be tide to some
development plan. The charge of the City is to protect the Health Safety and Welfare of the public.
The City Commission should table this matter until the incoming EPA leadership can review the
current delisting.
