Dear Bozeman City Commission,
I'm writing in support of the Human Resource Development Council of District IX's
application with the City of Bozeman for approval of their site plan and special
use permit for the development of the Housing First Village, an affordable
housing initiative, on North 7t" Avenue at 2007 Wheat Drive.
Affordable housing is a critical issue in Bozeman and I applaud HRDC for their
initiatives in this area. They have also provided a warming center for the
homeless. The Housing First Village project addresses both housing and
homelessness. 19 homes targeted to an appropriate group is an important step
forward in our housing deficit. The incorporation of these homes into a program
to assist homeless in moving toward a stable, productive life is innovative and
proven. The additional benefit to the community is diminished burden on our
health care, mental health services and assistance programs. It also provides a
path toward adding able and productive citizens to our community who we might
otherwise be lost.
As an 8-year Habitat builder I've seen how very difficult it is to provide affordable
housing in Bozeman. My wife has worked at the Warming Center and seen the
growing need there. The Housing First Village development is targeted, innovative
and different. It has been tried and worked elsewhere with community port
We are asking that the Bozeman City Commission provide that support and
leadership in this effort.
Sincerely yours,
Bruce Smith
