This property consists of one historical feature: a house built in 1960. The house is wood-framed, single-story structure with a
basement apartment, and has characteristics of the Minimal Traditional style typical of mid-century housing developments. It has a L-
shaped plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a side gabled roof covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in
horizontal composition board, which is chipped and crumbling in places. The gable ends have vertical board sided embellishments.
The primary façade faces east, onto 6th Ave. The main entry is above grade, centered and recessed, and accessed by wood stairs and
small deck. The basement apartment has an exterior entrance on the north elevation below grade, covered by a shed roofed extension
of the side gabled roof. The original windows have been replaced, but the openings are intact. The front façade has a large picture
window with narrow modern metal double hung windows on either side.
There is a single-stall garage under the south end of the roof, with a wood paneled access door on the south end of the east façade. The
vehicle entry is wood paneled with a row of windows near the top.
The site is well maintained. Vegetation in the front yard includes a manicured lawn, a deciduous tree directly in front of the bay
window of the front façade, and a large mature coniferous tree in the front northern portion of the lawn. Mature deciduous trees are
located in the backyard, to the west of the house.
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-
year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.”
Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred; the windows have been replaced. The site is in good
condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
The property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. It was platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey
E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941.
Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, Montana. On August 12, 1883 Lena married
Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s
death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland Oregon. Lena Border was
a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Lena died in August of 1941 and is buried next to Henry
in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came
to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC) which became Montana State University. Harvey taught from
1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 and Ina died in 1972 (The Billings Gazette 18 July 1956). They are buried
together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004).
Roy and Verna Ayres purchased the property on December 12, 1946. Roy had been born in Butler, Missouri on April 9, 1899. Verna
(Mecum) Ayres was born in Douglas, Wyoming on July 14, 1904. Roy graduated from Park County High School and attended the
University of Montana. Verna and Roy were married July 30, 1924 in Douglas, Wyoming. Roy served in the Navy during World War
II. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, and the Bagdad Shrine Temple. Mr. Ayres
started Bozeman Granite Works and operated it until 1970. He died January 14, 1986. Verna died May 19, 1995. Roy and Verna are
buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, Montana (Findagrave.com 2004).
Emil Martel and his wife Adeline purchased the property on November 10, 1960. Emil Martel was born in Friedenstal, Ukraine, a son
of Johann and Karoline Junker Martel. Emil grew up in Ukraine, marrying Adeline Losing on December 13, 1934 in Birsula, Ukraine.
During WWII, they were evacuated to Germany and remained there until 1951 when they immigrated to the United States (The
Billings Gazette 4 Feb 1988). They settled first in Baker, MT and then moved to Bozeman, MT in 1956. Adeline was born on April
20, 1915 in Makarowa, Ukraine to Jakob and Lydia Singer Losing. Emil died in 1988 and Adeline died in 2004 (Findagrave.com
2004). They are buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (William Martel, personal communication, 2019) (The
Belgrade News 25 Apr 2006).
On March 1, 1960 Emil and his son, William, formed Martel Construction. The first houses Martel Construction built were on North
6th Avenue in Bozeman, MT (William Martel, personal communication, 2019). This residence, built in 1960, was one of the first
houses the newly formed Martel Construction erected. Emil and William sold the property to John Arthur and Betty Jean Nash on
August 23, 1961.
Betty Jean Nash (aka Betty J. King) sold the house to Clark W. and Lucille M. Comstock on May 30, 1974. Lucille lived in the house
until approximately 2007. Lucille was born in Livingston, MT on May 18, 1921, as the daughter of Frank and Cora MacDonal
Wiggins. She married Clark William Comstock on November 5, 1947 in Los Angeles, California. Lucille worked in the Livingston
and Bozeman public libraries. Lucille died on March 19, 2008 in her home in Idaho Falls, Idaho (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 2008).
Clark died on February 9, 1997. He was a hardware salesman while living in this residence (R.L. Polk & Co.).
L. Jean Nedrud purchased the property on September 14, 2001. Nedrud sold the property to Joy A. and Randy L. White, Jens V.
Nedrud, Homes 4 Rent Inc. on June 6, 2011.
The current owners as of October 2019, Catron Creek LLC, purchased the property on April 20, 2014.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-
year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.”
Since then, the property has come of age. There appear to be no changes since this previous survey, although the original survey does
state that design and materials have changed since its original construction.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Postwar
Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the Minimal Traditional housing, as it was seen
throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order
to evaluate district potential.

Integrity

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The site is in good condition, overall. Damage and deterioration are noted on the siding, there is a broken garage window pane on
south elevation, and the windows flanking the east façade picture window are replacements. Cumulatively, these have affected
integrity of materials. Other aspects have been retained. No major alterations appear to have been made to the house and Metcalf
finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
