MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 401 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 004 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Hip box/minimal traditional Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of two historical architectural features: a single-story wood-framed Minimal Traditional house and a detached two- stall garage. The house was built in 1955 and is a Minimal Traditional style dwelling with a rectangular plan shape and concrete foundation. The roof is hipped and covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior is clad in wood shingles with vertical board-and-batten siding. The primary façade faces east and is asymmetrical, with a recessed corner entry on the south end. This recessed entry is above grade, accessed by a flight of concrete steps with a metal railing, with a decorative metal post on the top step. The east façade is adorned with a brick veneer. There is a large picture window on this façade, with one-over-one double-hung side lites. Two-lite sliding windows are present in the basement. Additional window types are present throughout the feature, including a tall and narrow glass-block window on the south elevation. A brick chimney is near-center on the hipped roof. The two-stall garage was built in 1966 and is located to the west of the house, facing south. The garage is wood-framed with composition board siding. The roof is hipped and extends east, past the exterior wall to connect with the house, sheltering a paved pathway between the two structures, in addition to the rear entrance to the house. The garage is accessed by a side door on the east elevation as well as two paneled wood sectional garage doors on the south elevation. This site is in excellent condition. Most original windows and openings are intact and it looks much as it did when originally recorded by James R. McDonald Architects in 1984. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred. The site is in excellent condition overall, and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 401 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 004 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. It was platted as the Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941. Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, Montana. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border. They lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland Oregon. Mrs. Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge. Lena died in August of 1941 and was buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 1941). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple was married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC), which became Montana State University, from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July of 1956 and Ina died in 1972 (The Billings Gazette 18 July 1956). They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com 2004). This residence was completed by 1955 (R. L. Polk & Co 1950, 1954). It was first occupied by building contractor William Willmore and his wife Ruth. They lived in the house from 1954 to 1956 (R. L. Polk & Co. 1956). William Daniel Willmore was born on March 16, 1907 in Coldwater, Missouri to Carroll and Minnie (Cloninger) Willmore (Ancestry.com 2001). William married Ruth Keys on July 5, 1927 in Bozeman (The Anaconda Standard 10 July 1927). Ruth Simpson Keys was born on April 12, 1906 in Lavmer, Iowa to George Lester and Hattie Keys (Ancestry.com 2017). On September 10, 1957 Henry Joseph Jongeward and his wife Lydia (TeSelle) Jongeward purchased the property. Henry was born on June 17, 1899 in Orange City, Iowa to Ringer and Evadena Vander Jongeward (Ancestry.com 2017). Lydia was born February 13, 1901 in Manhattan, Montana to Henry and Alice TeSelle (Ancestry.com 2017). Henry and Lydia owned and operated the L & H Restaurant located at 1003 W. College in Bozeman from approximately 1961 to 1964. After this, Henry worked in food service at various locations, including as a cook for the Gallatin Rest Home and the Lamda Chi Fraternity. From 1969 until his retirement in 1978, he worked for Montana State University Food Service (R. L. Polk & Co. 1961-1978). Henry died on April 29, 1985 and Lydia died July 6, 2001 at the age of 100 years. They are buried together in Meadowview Cemetery in Manhattan, Montana (Findagrave.com 2004). Charles W. and Marcia J. Hendron purchased the property on October 23, 1986. Marcia was the daughter of Henry and Lydia Jongeward. She was born in 1934 in Manhattan, MT. Charles Hendron married Marcia Jongeward on March 21, 1954 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com 2017). The Hendrons owned this residence until April 8, 1994 when the property was sold to Michael E. and Debra L. Wheat. The Wheats sold the residence on December 1, 2005 to Theresa B. Moss. She sold it to Juliana Frost on October 31, 2014. The current owner, as of October 2019, is Gallatin Dreams LLC. Table 1. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 401 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 004 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE James R. McDonald Architects first recorded this site in 1984. At that time, the property had not yet reached the fifty-year threshold for consideration as a historic property and was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Since then, the property has come of age. Very few changes have occurred. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP of State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the Minimal Traditional housing style, as it was seen throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 401 N 5TH AVE Site Number: 004 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in excellent condition. Few changes have been made over time and appear to be limited to the replacement of some original windows. Openings appear to be intact, however, and only integrity of materials is affected. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
