HomeMy WebLinkAboutApp. A. - Sewer Design Report 09-24-2019 NORTON RANCH LIFT STATION CAPACITY ANALYSIS NORTON EAST RANCH SUBDIVISION PHASE 5 Prepared for: Norton Properties, LLC. 63026 Lower Meadow Drive #200, Bend, OR 97701-5877 Prepared by: Project Number: 161141 April 2018 1.0 SEWER SYSTEM CONFIGURATION Phase 5 of Norton East Ranch Subdivision will connect to the existing Norton Ranch lift station wet well. 8-inch PVC gravity sanitary sewer mains are proposed throughout the subdivision in the City standard location for local streets. The sewer system will run in the open space parcel located along the southern property line of the proposed Lakes at Valley West Subdivision to the north of the proposed Norton East Ranch, Phase 5 Subdivision. Consent has been obtained by the property owners to allow for this encroachment. From here, the main will tie into the existing Norton Ranch Lift Station wet well. 2.0 CURRENT LIFT STATION CONFIGURATION The Norton Ranch Lift Station wet well has an inner diameter of 8’ and contains three pump pads with two older submersible pumps and one newer submersible pump: (2) older Flygt NP3102 SH 3 Adaptive 257 Pumps, being 6.5 horsepower, with 125 mm impellers, and one newer NP3102 MT 3 Adaptive 465 pump, being 5 horsepower, with 152 mm impeller. All three submersible pumps have the ability to pump into either a 6” PVC SDR-26 or a 4” PVC SDR-26 force main or both force mains simultaneously. Any combination of three pumps and two force mains is possible with the current configuration. The newer pump was installed in 2012 per the recommendation of HDR Engineering, Inc. following an evaluation that was prepared to address vibration concerns with the older pumps. The vibration concerns were due to the existing pumps operating at the far- right side of their pump curve and therefore outside of their optimal operating range. The report concluded that during initial startup of the pumps prior to when the entire force main is fully filled the discharge flow experiences a break in the hydraulic grade line or what is known as column separation. The HDR report states that the original pumps are “sized larger than is needed for actual pumping conditions” and that “the pumping units need to account for the likely condition where the force main(s) experience column separation and partially drain after each pumping cycle”. 3.0 PROPOSED AND CONSTRUCTED DWELLING UNITS The majority of the lots in Phases 1 through 5 are single family lots, however there are several lots containing multi-family structures. Figure 1 was put together for this analysis and this figure summarizes the currently built and proposed dwelling units in Phases 1 through 5. According to the attached figure the total developed or proposed to be developed area of Phases 1-5 equates to 99.8 acres. The overall projected total dwelling units of Phases 1 through 5 equates to 549 dwelling units. Phase 5 includes 141 dwelling units. The table below summarizes dwelling units and acreage of Phases 1 through 5: TOTAL CONSTRUCTED AND PROPOSED DWELLING UNITS FOR NORTON EAST RANCH SUBDIVISION Phase Dwelling Units Acreage Phase 1 82 21.453 Phase 2 30 6.660 Phase 2A 36 10.960 Phase 3A 48 11.457 Phase 3B 30 9.591 Phase 3C 30 6.353 Phase 4 152 15.584 Phase 5 141 17.788 TOTAL 549 99.846 4.0 AVERAGE DAILY FLOW The flowrates used herein are according to the City of Bozeman Design Standards and Specifications Policy, March 2004 including Addendums 1 through 6. The peaking factor for the design area is determined by calculating the equivalent population and inserting the population into the Harmon Formula. An 8-inch main is the minimum diameter allowed within the City of Bozeman. All new sewer lines shall be sized to flow at no more than 75% of capacity for peak hour conditions. Using the city average of 2.17 people per household the equivalent population for the service area is calculated and the current City design standard of 65 gallons per capita day (GPCD) we have: Norton East Ranch Subdivision, Phases 1-4 (wastewater generated by existing phases): Equivalent Population: (2.17 people/dwelling unit) (408 dwelling units) = 885 people Assumed infiltration rate: (150 gal/acre/day) (82.06 acres) = 12,309 GPD Average Flow: 861 people x 65 GPCD + 12,309 GPD = 69,834 GPD (48.5 GPM) Norton East Ranch Subdivision, Phase 5: Equivalent Population: (2.17 people/dwelling unit) (141 dwelling units) = 306 people Assumed infiltration rate: (150 gal/acre/day) (17.79 acres) = 2,669 GPD Average Flow: 306 people x 65 GPCD + 2,669 GPD = 22,559 GPD (15.7 GPM) TOTAL AVERAGE DAILY FLOW PHASES 1 THROUGH 5 = 15.7 GPM + 48.5 GPM = 64.2 GPM 5.0 PEAK FLOW The peak flow rate for Phases 1 – 5 is calculated by multiplying the City's design generation rate of 65 gallons per capita per day (GPCD) by the population, multiplying by the peaking factor, and adding the infiltration rate: Harmon Formula: Peaking Factor = (18 + P0.5)/(4 + P0.5) where: P = Population in thousands Peaking Factor = (18 + 1.1910.5)/(4 + 1.1910.5) Peaking Factor = 3.75 Peak Flow Rate: (65 GPCD) (1191 people) (3.75) + 12,309 GPD + 2,669 GPD = 305,284 GPD TOTAL PEAK FLOW= 212.0 GPM (0.472 CFS) 6.0 CAPACITY ANALYSIS OF NORTON RANCH LIFT STATION In order to conduct our analysis of the Norton Ranch Lift Stations’ current capacity based on the pumping configuration being used in normal operation we reviewed the original design report prepared in February of 2009 by Sanderson Stewart and also the 2012 HDR report (referenced above). We prepared a Water CAD model which approximates column separation conditions which may be encountered at startup and also a model which represents full force main pumping conditions. We used a Hazen Williams coefficient of 120 per DEQ requirements for both startup and full force main conditions. Both the startup condition and the full force main condition were prepared for the 6” force main only. We did our analysis this way because Sanderson Stewart’s report indicated that pumping through both force mains with our current peak and average will result in low velocities. The 6” PVC force main will provide the most possible capacity while still meeting minimum force main velocity requirements. We approximated the column separation by daylighting the model to a reservoir at station 15+50 (approximately) of the force main. WaterCAD Version 8.11.3.17 was used to conduct this capacity analysis and all model results are included with this report along with the pump curve and specification sheets provided by Xylem, Inc. Based on our analysis we agree with HDR’s findings. HDR sized the new pump for varying conditions which range from startup, where column separation may be encountered, to full pumping conditions. Our startup analysis indicates that the Adaptive 465 meets the column separation condition and is able to operate within its normal range. Our analysis also indicates as suspected that the original pumping units can meet full force main conditions but perform poorly under column separation. Our results under full force main conditions showed a slightly lower firm capacity than what was reported by HDR. When using the pump curve for the FLYGT Adaptive 465, 152 mm impeller, 5 horsepower pump, the firm capacity was calculated to be 244 GPM under full force main conditions. When using the pump curve for the FLYGT Adaptive 257, 125 mm impeller, 6.5 horsepower pump, the firm capacity was calculated to be 266 GPM under full force main conditions. HDR’s firm capacity was reported as 263 GPM under full force main conditions using the Adaptive 465 pump curve but HDR used a higher friction coefficient which is closer to the actual smoothness of PVC pipe and therefore is probably a closer approximation of actual field pumping conditions. 7.0 PROJECTED CYCLE TIMES PHASES 1 THROUGH 5 Pump Controls and Cycling The wet well level transducer control points are assumed to be set according to the original design report prepared by the 2010 design report prepared by Sanderson Stewart. The working volume of the wet well can be set anywhere between 441 gallons and 3,051 gallons as indicated in the 2010 design report. This equates to a working depth range in the existing wet well of between 1.1 and 8.1 feet in the existing 8 ft. square wet well according to Sanderson Stewart. The following are the level settings for Scenarios 1 through 9 according to Sanderson Stewart: Influent Invert: 4756.87 High Water Alarm : 4756.60 Lag Pump On: 4756.30 Lead On: 4749.15 up to 4756.09 (Scenarios 1 through 9) Lead Off: 4747.98 Bottom of Wet Well: 4745.93 • With the new FLYGT Pump Model Adaptive 465 operating independently the flow through the force main will be 244 GPM; total head losses (friction and static) = 26.77 feet. Cycle Times: Cycle times were analyzed for average flows and peak flow: During average flows one pump runs at 244 GPM: Average Flow (64.2 GPM): Working volume = 441 gallons Fill time = 441 gallons/64.2 GPM = 6.9 minutes Drain time: One pump on at 244 GPM. Solve for time to drain (x), with volume equal to 0. 441 + 64.2(x) - 244(x) = 0 x = 2.5 minutes Cycle Time during average flow = 6.9 minutes + 2.5 minutes = 9.4 minutes During peak flow one pump will operate at 244 GPM Peak Flow (212.0 GPM) Working volume = 441 gallons Fill time = 441 gallons/212.0 GPM = 2.1 minutes Drain time: One pump on at 244 GPM. Solve for time to drain (x), with volume equal to 0. 441 + 212.0(x) - 244(x) = 0 x = 13.8 minutes Cycle Time during peak flows = 1.6 minutes + 13.8 minutes = 15.4 minutes 8.0 CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, it appears that the current pumping configuration is adequate to meet capacity requirements for Norton East Ranch Subdivision Phases 1 - 5. The two existing backup pumps do provide adequate firm capacity to meet peak flow under full force main conditions. In an emergency situation where the lead pump (the new Adaptive 465) is out of service, the two existing backup pumps can be used to meet peak requirements as demonstrated by HDR. Under such an emergency it may be necessary for wastewater operators to throttle the existing valves, as was done by HDR, to reduce vibrations until full force main conditions develop. It appears that no lift station modifications are required at this time to address capacity issues. The only action that will be needed is to switch pump discharge over to just the 6” PVC force main, which provides a higher flow capacity than the 4” PVC force main.
