Dear Bozeman City Commission:
Thank you for the opportunity to write to you regarding the Provisional Adoption ofOrdinance 2056, Establishing a Municipal Percent for Art Program.
The Emerson Center for Arts & Culture along with many other local arts organizations
appreciated the opportunity to work with the City of Bozeman and the Downtown BozemanPartnership on the Bozeman 2020 Community Plan. We greatly appreciate the emphasis of
this plan on the arts and the recognition that the arts play in enhancing our community forresidents and visitors alike.
The Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture unequivocally supports the arts in all forms. Webelieve that the presence of the arts adds to the fiber of our community. The arts inspire,
entertain, teach, impart cultural knowledge, and so much more. The Emerson also believesthat the presence of permanent public art along our city’s streets, city facilities, parks, private
businesses, and local landmarks enriches our community.
Municipalities, developers, and artists working together have effectively implemented
“Percent for the Arts Programs” across the country. These partnerships along with localnonprofit arts organizations have played an important role in the installation of permanent
public art in cities large and small.
A “Percent for Art Program” is an important decision for the City of Bozeman to take in
supporting public art. The Emerson would have appreciated time to fully review this importantprogram. Time would have allowed us to engage in a dialogue with the City of Bozeman,
individual artists, community stakeholders, and other local arts organizations in a meaningfulway regarding the details and implementation of the proposed Provisional Adoption ofOrdinance 2056, Establishing a Municipal Percent for Art Program.
The Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture believes in the power of the arts, to connect and
strengthen our community. Thank you for your time and dedication to serving the City ofBozeman.
Sincerely,
Susan Denson-Guy
