D.Transportation Alternatives– Discussion Item (20 minutes, Linda DuPriest)
a.Bad news: Montana Department of Transportation is cancelling the Transportation
Alternatives call for project funding proposals, but is going to focus on repaving projects.
MDT feels that current Federal administration may recise (call back and cancel) the
funding for the project, so MDT wants to wait on these projects. MDT has decided to
proceed with pavement preservation projects will proceed, and application is open.n
According to federal statute, State DOTs can choose not to take the funding, which is
what it seems MTDOT has done.
b.Linda recommends that the Board contact the Governor’s committee, after proper
vetting by the commission. Linda will continue to gather information and keep us
informed.
c.How TA funding works: communities apply for TA funding, then MDT plans and
completes the project. Since there might not be funding, MDT doesn’t want to get into
the plans.Pavement preservation plans may proceed, however, and we do have
pavement preservation projects that could be done in town, so Linda will make sure we
apply for those when it is time.
E.Old Business (10 minutes)
a.Bike Maps: Andrew had no luck with getting control of the maps. Suggests we move
forward with making a new map from scratch. Linda can move forward on the map.
Vandelinder says that Capital Improvement Project funding can pay for a GIS map made
by a consultant. Linda will move forward with applying for the funding and obtaining an
estimate on cost.
b.Letter to the Governor: Jason Karp brought up (see June MInutes) a letter to Governor
and MDT about how Bike Walk Montana should be part of statewide bicycling decisions.
Nothing’s been done yet. Candace will ask Jason Karp about the status of the letter
c.Bike Friendly Businesses: Lila and Sam got OnSite Management to apply for Bike Friendly
Business membership. MSU finished their BFU application as well.
F.New Business (10 minutes)
a.Bike Friendly Community : Re-application is due on February 2019, will start looking at
it.
b.Fall commuter challenge: Challenge at Montana State coming in October, with public
presentations and safety class on October 2nd.
c.Downtown Traffic: New Downtown Traffic plan is in the works. Some indication that
they want a bi-directional bike path on Mendenhall or Babcock. Linda will ask how the
bike board can have some input, and a survey will be sent out in the near future.
