Bozeman Area Bicycle Advisory Board (BABAB)
Meeting Notes for April 4, 2018
6-8 p.m. City Hall, Commission Room
A.Meeting Called to Order at 6:03 PM. In attendance: Dillon Warn, Jason Karp, Rachel Rockafellow,
Candace Mastel, Andrew Brechbuhler, Elise Kranmer, John Vandelinder, Jeff Krauss, James Lusby.
Members of the Public: Linda DuPriest, Ralph Zimmer, Matt.
B.Approve Previous Meeting Minutes: Rachel proposes, Karp 2nds, approval is unanimous.
C.Public Comment:
○Ralph Zimmer stated that many months ago, the City updated ADA compliance. At the next
meeting, the City is considering annexing a property along the Frontage Road, Nelson Road for
.4 miles west. Ralph feels this would be a prime place to put a separated shared use pathway.
Ralph is planning on attending, and is encouraging others to do so as well.
D.Bike Walk Summit Update – Information Item (15 minutes, Rachel Rockafellow)
●Bike Walk Montana held their conference in Bozeman in March. Summit is held every other
year. Interesting notes from the Summit:
○1st speaker from Boise shared information about designing paths and best engineering
practices.
○Snow removal is a priority in Quebec. 5300 km of bike trails and shared use paths, and
they are all plowed in the winter time.
○Breakout sessions at Holiday Inn: How to increase bike tourism to the city, biking in
foreign country experiences, lots of positive information about biking, and good
networking with Bike Minnesota
○Sweden uses a health impact pyramid while developing road designs. The focus is on
simply removing possibilities for problems to occur, making roads safer for everyone
●MTDOT is developing a Bike-Walk plan statewide, more information to come April 20th. State
will be looking for input on their new plan.
○Discussion points: MTDOT changed some policies about a year and a half ago to actively
discourage construction of paths within their right-of-ways. Something did change,
about 10 years ago. Three Forks used to have a good relationship. MTDOT has a person
who is assigned to bike issues: Sheila Ludlow. Look for MTDOT’s feedback in the coming
weeks.
E.Wayfinding/Map Update – Information Item (15 minutes, Andrew Brechbuhler)
○Mapping process is underway. He needs to know the new bike Routes since 2011 and what will
be coming soon, with anticipated construction dates.
○Discussion points:
i.When is project anticipated to be done? Not sure… Would it be better to have it done
soon or in October after this year’s construction season?
ii.We’ve printed out so many of the 2011s, What if we added current routes, and printed
fewer every few years so that we can keep them updated?
iii.Would it be possible to add proposed routes, or “coming soon” routes? Dashed lines
would be good to help differentiate them. We should be able to add in what is currently
on the 5-year plan. Add them as separate layers in the file.
iv.Should we check with other city’s maps?
v.Back side of the map has a blow-up of the downtown area, should we change the scale
there to include more area? GVLT path map has most of the Valley on it, almost out to
4-corners.
vi.What elase do we need? A delivery date?
vii.Let’s just get them printed since the bike shops and tourist shops want them done soon.
F.Wayfinding Committee:
○Worked on 7 routes at Linda’s. Linda had a lot of work done by their meeting, went very
smoothly. Next meeting will meet and get input on most important routes around town to have
signed. The new sign machine is ready for production soon!
○Wayfinding project will develop each year as the city grows. It’s a very complex project that has
been delayed several times due to complexity and additions of interested parties, Downtown
Business, GVLT, parks and rec, and so on get interested in the project and it delays it.
G.Gallatin Valley Bike Club Update – Information Item (15 minutes, Rachel Rockafellow)
○Topic of the last GVBC meeting was Biking in Glacier National Park. GVBC hosting several rides
this spring, they will also be raising money this year at the Chico Ride for Parkinson's
organization.
○Other things GVBC is doing: kids rides, race series, socials, Lots going on.
○Linda is encouraging them to work on Bike Education programs as well.
○Bike Swap is on May 5th, same as MSU graduation.
H.Encouraging Bike Friendly Businesses – Information Item (10 minutes, Candace Mastel for Lila
Fleishman)
○Lila’s project to encourage local businesses to become LAB-certified Bike Friendly Businesses,
and support the Commuter Challenge and Bike Week continues. She is looking to recruit
businesses to become LAB certified Bike Friendly Businesses. Lila will continue making contact
with businesses
○She has been in contact with Amelia Neptune at LAB, at the national level we have no Bike
Friendly businesses registered in Bozeman, and few in the state.
○Discussion Question: Can BABAB support her directly, which would support the LAB directly? Or
does this need to be a personal project? As long as there is no personal financial interest for
her, just Lila recruiting businesses, it should be AOK. Commissioner Krauss says it’s okay, as long
as she’s not being aggressive, and is working as an ambassador for biking at this point.
○Rachel is interested in helping, will contact Lila.
I.Old Business (10 minutes)
○Montana Historical Society approved use of the 25th Infantry Bike Corps Image at Ferguson and
Oak. MSU is also working on ideas for the Imagine Dragons concert this summer, John will let us
know more. Elise has a bike Valet system in the works up MSU.
J.New Business (10 minutes)
○Spring Commute-A-Thon (3/26-4/6) Commute a thon is still going on… bozemancommute.org.
○Yellowstone Ride on Sunday: Jason Karp says 40s and rain is good enough! Dress like you’re
going XC skiing. Route is West Yellowstone to Gibbon Falls and back. About 40 miles round trip.
Bring a lunch! 11AM is when they depart Chamber of Commerce in West Yellowstone.
○Elise: MSU Bike to School day is Weds April 18. hopefully a good turnout, ordered 500 new
lights to hand out. Bike Rodeo, fixit station, etc, will be at Montana Hall.
K.Adjourn - 6:57PM.
