Dear Matt,
I was first introduced to Forward Montana at a party at Barbara Rusmoreand Mike Clark's home, 4 years ago. I have been a supporter ever since. I
am so impressed with the positive energy of young people. They are key
to moving our country forward with progressive ideals.
Christopher Coburn is undoubtedly a rising star in our community, and I
can understand why Forward Montana made such an effort to elevate him
in the eyes of the City Commission in their search for an interim
commissioner.
However, you need to know that I strongly disapprove of Forward
Montana spending its precious time and energy on creating a political
controversy surrounding the appointment of Jennifer Madgic. Please
share this with your fellow board members: I, for one, feel that Forward
Montana should pick its battles more strategically if you want continued
broad support. Your outrage at the City Commission's process might have
the unfortunate fallout of distracting the efforts of a most hard-working,
talented, kind, fair and highly experienced woman, Jennifer Madgic.
Because a vacancy does not trigger an outright election campaign, it's my
understanding that the Commission has discretion when appointing an
interim commissioner. Madgic likely could have garnered dozens of vocalsupporters to attend the meeting and take up just as much time as Coburn
supporters, if this had been an actual campaign. Even with that scenario,
the final decision surely should not have been based on a shouting match.
I trust that the Commissioners weighed all the candidates' attributes and Iam confident that they made the correct choice based on the stated
needs.
I strongly encourage Forward Montana to assist Chris Coburn with anactual run for City Commissioner in a year, when there will be an actual
vote by the people. I may vote for him. But in the mean time, drop this
misplaced controversy and move on to more important and strategically
significant efforts.--
