Here is a summary of my thoughts in writing. 8/20/2019 As I returned to my neighborhood after attending the CityPlanning Commission Meeting, I was suddenly overcome with a sense of comfort. Leaving the bright lights and traffic to the main corridors and commercial areas felt peaceful and good.Perhaps rather than concern ourselves with creating “commercial nodes” or “activity nodes” within walking distance in every neighborhood…we intentionally create “Namaste Nodes”. Apoint in every neighborhood where we can enjoy green space and be guaranteed a view of the mountains, the sunrise, or the sunset…or preferably all three. One of the things that impressedme the most when purchasing a home here in Bozeman was the consideration, indeed the requirement that each development have a “park” commensurate with the acreage dedicated tohousing. Really? It’s the law that there has to be a park in every neighborhood? I couldn’t believe it. Having moved from Iowa, I can tell you…Iowa is not heaven…this is. I would havebeen far less impressed if the realtor had said the city required there be at least one business in every neighborhood. Give me trails, parks, spots for quiet reflection. As I go about my day, Ican consolidate my purchases of groceries, cosmetics and electronics at the commercial nodes. Economy of scale is the evolution from Mom and Pop stores to Wal-Marts and Costco. It’s notexactly desirable, but it is how we live now. We can’t change that, but we can protect our views of the mountains, the sunrise and the sunset….which is often blocked by commercialnodes.
