I attended UM with Christopher. We completed our Masters in Public Health in the same cohort. I very much respect Christopher as a public health professional. He's certainly qualified for our Health Department Board. Although, I do not support his appointment to our City Council. Christopher isn't near as qualified as other applicants. However, more importantly, Christopher is associated with a group whose goal is to "Defund the Police". In a statement to that group he puts forth the idea that Bozeman is overridden with "discrimination, violence, and fear" and that his role on the Council would be to right that wrong. First, I disagree that Bozeman is filled with "discrimination, violence, and fear". The fact that people from other states are flocking to Bozeman proves that. Second, I don't think it's appropriate to appoint someone with such a strong bias that our police are cruel and should be "defunded". The reality is Bozeman has relatively minimal "discrimination, violence, and fear" because the police do such an exemplary job. Third, while I think that special issue advocacy is important (I've certainly engaged in much of it myself), it's inappropriate to use a public position for gain in your own personal advocacy issues. Again, Christopher is a tremendous health advocate; however, not the qualified or rounded individual our City needs.
