Sign Design Narrative:
The comprehensive Story Mill Community Park signage package has been developed as
a partnership between the design team, the Trust for Public Land and City of Bozeman
staff representatives to be cohesive, far reaching, and appropriate to the site context.
The signs are intended to assist in directional wayfinding of park users, provide
regulatory information, and highlight the contributions of the community that have
made the park possible. The materiality of the signs is subdued in coloring and material,
so as not to detract from the experience of using the site. The concept for the package
was born out of a celebration of the surrounding industry – the Story Mill, the railroad,
and other contemporary industries. Constructed of steel and concrete, the signs
hearken to industrial materials. Consistency in branding, lettering, and icons are used
throughout. Signs are applied to the community center and the restroom structure as
required, while most other signs are stand alone on posts, as described in the package.
No signs are intended to have lighting.
Signs will be installed under the construction schedule of the current park plan, led by
the general contractor team of Langlas and Associates. Upon opening of the park, the
signs will be part of the park maintenance schedule as operated by the City of Bozeman.
