Appoint Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Greg Sullivan, City Attorney Jeff Mihelich, City Manager SUBJECT: Appoint Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore MEETING DATE: October 7, 2020 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Action RECOMMENDATION: Appoint a Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore from the Current Ranks of the City Commission RECOMMENDED MOTION: I move to appoint Commissioner _____ to serve as Deputy Mayor Pro Tempore for the remainder of the current Mayoral term, ending in compliance with Section 6.01(b) of the Bozeman Charter at the beginning of the first regularly scheduled meeting in January of 2022. BACKGROUND: On September 9, 2020 former City of Bozeman Mayor Chris Mehl resigned from office. Based on the City’s Charter, Mayor Cyndy Andrus who was serving as deputy mayor at the time of the resignation succeeded to the office of Mayor. In addition to the filling of a vacancy on the City Commission due to the resignation (see the other action item for this evening’s meeting), the Commission should appoint one of its current members to the role of deputy mayor pro tempore. The Commission may do this by vote of a simple majority. We attach a memorandum describing the process. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the Commission.
