BOZEMAN CITY COMMISION
PO BOX 1230 BOZEMAN, MT 59771
We are homeowners on the recently opened thoroughfare at Cottonwood Rd (south of Oak St.
and north of Durston Rd) across from Gallatin High School. The posted speed limit of 35mph is
extremely concerning given this is a residential area. In conjunction with this being a residential
area it is also a school zone with a posted speed limit of 25mph. The school zone is signaled by
a lighted sign which has not been operational since school has begun.
Given the base speed limit of 35mph and inoperable school signs the average traveled speed is
well over 40mph and in many instances is over 50mph. This is especially concerning since there
are children at play, residents walking dogs and many cyclists. Our concern has been brought to
Bozeman Police Department who have been gracious enough to place speed monitoring trailers
which confirms the elevated speeds listed above.
We propose the base speed limit be reduced from 35mph to 25mph and additional reduction to
20mph during school hours. This reduction to 25mph is consistent with the posted residential
speed limit on other major thoroughfares such as 19th St (south of Durston and north of Main).
The elevated posted speed limit appears to be an oversight that has drastically reduced
residents’ ability to enjoy their homes and is a community safety concern.
SINCERELY,
CHARLES BUNNEY & RACHEL STUDLEY
