Aquatics Staff Recreation Division Update Jamie Saitta, Recreation Manager 9/3/2020 • 2020 summer camps have come to an end and as we reflect back, we feel it was one of the most rewarding summers we have had to date. While it presented many challenges, the rewards remain at the forefront. We continue to hear positive feedback from parents as they too reflect back and realize how important our camps were for their children and their families during this unprecedented time. • The Bozeman School District will be returning to school this fall in a blended model which means children will be in school in person two days a week and learning remotely the other three. This model presents challenges for working families and the need for childcare in our community is great. In order to help, the Recreation Division has developed “Operation Rec Ed” camps for children in K-8th grades. This service will be offered on a month to month basis to city of Bozeman employees at no cost. Two sessions will be offered, one on Monday and Tuesday and one on Thursday and Friday from 7:45am-5:30pm at the Story Mill Community Center. Our popular camp model will be followed with time and assistant with remote learning scheduled throughout the day. We are partnering with the Bozeman Public Library as well as the MSU Education Department to offer reading support and tutoring along with book and tech clubs which have historically happened during the after school programs in each elementary school. Operation Rec Ed will start on September 8th and will be our programming focus this fall. That being said, we made the decision not to print a fall/winter guide this year. • We are in the process of developing lesson plans and hiring additional Recreation Leaders to help us successfully implement our new Operation Rec Ed Camps. With only a week between the end of summer camps and the start of our new fall camps, we are busy as ever and will be forced to do our new staff training during program implementation next week. We are confident that the experience that each of our new leaders brings will make that training successful. The Recreation Division is looking forward to helping to fill a pressing childcare need within our own organization this fall and look forward to implementing a new program that we can all be proud of. PARK REPORT SEPTEMBER 2020 • Maintenance continues throughout the park system, tasks include but not limited to: garbage collection, dog station maintenance, restroom cleaning, mowing, playground inspections/repairs, irrigation repairs, fertilization, string trimming, overseeding athletic fields and spot spraying for noxious weeds- just a sample of day in day out maintenance. • We (the Parks Division) have experienced a significant uptick in park visits during the pandemic. Now with the students back, the amount of visits to the park are at an all-time high. • We have had 50+ acres at the Sports Park dumped on us unexpectedly, as the farmer decided not to alert us on his intent not to farm the acreage south of the artificial turf. Therefore, we have dedicated over 100 hours and close to $11,000 in mowing, spraying and disking up the area. • The short term staff are done. • In the upcoming weeks, we will be interviewing for the assistant park superintendent, contracts manager and a full-time service worker in parks.
