Dear Mayor Mehl:
I am forwarding you a message I uploaded to the “Contact Us” section of the Bozeman Streetsdepartment web site. I wanted to make sure my request is seen by the appropriate department.
This morning I witnessed the Bozeman police cleaning up the aftermath of another traffic accident atthe intersection of Oak Street and Flanders Mill Road, adjacent to the northwest corner of the newGallatin High School. This is the third accident I have seen there in the past few months since Oak
was fully opened to traffic west of Ferguson. It is a dangerous intersection because only north-southtraffic (on Flanders Mill Rd) needs to stop. Because Oak Street is so wide due to the centermedian/power-line right-of-way, it can be difficult for Flanders Mill drivers to see all oncomingtraffic on Oak that will not stop for them. The situation will only get worse once the new high
school is in full session, when daylight hours are shorter, and when winter conditions make visibilityeven worse. This intersection really needs some type of traffic control device, either a four-way stopor ideally a traffic light (such as at the Ferguson-Oak intersection to the east). The intersection isdangerous for pedestrians as well attempting to cross Oak Street to get to the dog park or the athletic
fields near Baxter, and the opening of Gallatin High will only exacerbate the problem. I am urgingthat this problem be addressed before more accidents or a fatality occurs at this intersection.
