This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a T-shaped
plan with an open front porch with a shed roof. A garage is attached and
has a covered patio to one side. The two-bay facade is asymmetrical and con=

The frame construction is finished in brick below the front windows, shingles
on part of the bottom and board and batten on the rest. It rests on a
concrete foundation. The gable-shed dormer roof is covered with brown
asphalt shingles and features dormers and overhanging eaves. There is
a central brick chimney. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons, important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.

Revision 1985
Despite alterations to the porch and the varied, non-contributing sheathing,
this house is a contributing element in the district. The simple Bungalow style
house appears to be the work of local builder J.A. Bartholomew. The house was
built for Joseph A. Thalen, a professor of electrical engineering at Montana
State College from 1901 to 1938. Thalen apparently lived here until 1938.
