To the Bozeman City Commission:
I am a resident of Mountain View Apartments (Emily Drive - off of 22nd and Durston) and currently out of
work but fortunately able still to pay my rent. Our landlord has just yesterday put notices on all our doors
stating that due to the expiration of the CARES Act that they demand payment of rent, will begin taking
action on all the residents here who are behind on their rent – beginning with fines – and then further
action (we assume this means eviction). I assume this is beginning to happen across Bozeman. Given the
social upheaval this may cause due to the inability of so many here to pay, what can and will the City of
Bozeman do to protect people so that they do not lose their homes? How would a sudden influx of
homeless in our city be handled? At the very least, the City must refuse to use law enforcement in
enforcing these evictions. What would the City do if there's suddenly an increase to the homeless
population? Does the City have any legal means to stop evictions? It is imperative that the City do all in its
power to protect our most vulnerable populations.
Even if Congress renews something like the CARES Act, this still exposes long-term issues that the poor in
Bozeman face. Given the potential calamity that they right now face, the evictions and homelessness issue
is a pressing and important agenda item to deal with now.
If it is not dealt with by the City, Bozeman needs to be prepared for social unrest. We will not stand by as
the poorest in the City are left without options.
