Vodlenschchuk - Anti-racism policing planFrom:Edward Vodlenshchuk To:Agenda Subject:Public comment Date:Monday, July 27, 2020 7:50:46 PM Hi, my name is Eddie and I’m a student at MSU. I wanted to talk about the new anti racism policing plan, I think it’s a step in the right direction but I also see some glaring issues with it. Firstly, that no bipoc community members were consulted in the making of this plan, I don’t think that the police and city council can represent or understand how the bipoc community feels or know the best way to introduce reforms that will truly help them. Secondly, the creators of the 8cantwait reforms, that this plan includes, have apologized for their plan being too lenient and a “bandaid solution” and not addressing the roots of racist policing, and there should be a movement toward demilitarization and depolicing and investing in the community. Lastly, it worries me that the police/police chief were involved in drafting this plan, I don’t think the police should be the ones policing themselves, they cannot be truly unbiased towards their own organization. The people drafting police reforms should in no way be a part of the police, I think that is the only way to have a check on police power and an unbiased view on policing and what needs to change. Thanks for listening I hope this offers some constructive criticism toward this plan.
