Dear Bozeman Commission,
I am writing regarding the proposed parking permit increase. Our family would like you to vote against the increase for these reasons.
1. Why should houses near the University pay the entire load of the parking problems
created by the increasing student population at the university? Friends and neighbors 4blocks from us are not in the parking donut and pay no fees . Should the University or
whole community share some of this burden of increased pricing? I absolutely think yeswe should all share the cost.
2. The price has already increased many times and is already expensive for many
families. Our family of 5 for instance has 4 cars bc we have 4 drivers plus a boat andcamping trailer. That puts our price tag at $270 plus the guest permit fee bringing the total
to $315. That is an enormous amount of money to pay to park in front of our own house. In addition to increasing property taxes and decreasing incomes.
3. Why are funds from parking tickets not included in paying for the new system?
4. A chronicle article states the new system is very efficient for paid workers checking
vehicles. They can cover way more territory and in many cases never need to leave theirvehicle . This is saving on wages for personnel. There is no mention of that savings sent
out in a letter to residents. Only decreasing numbers of permits purchased which may bedue to increased pricing on permits.
There are ways to fund the new system without putting the complete burden on the small
number of residents who live near the University. Following the RPPD ordnance and it’sintent is utilizing funds from both MSU permitting and money from tickets. THIs money
should not be extra income for parking services but pay for the very expensive, efficientsystem. I would like to see permit prices go down. The parking program also needs to be
transparent where all the parking ticket money is going. In May 2017 permit prices wentfrom $10- $25. They have continued to increase at a rate the far surpasses inflation.
Sincerely,
