Permanent Stop Signs
I would like to city commission to consider making the temporary four-way stops at four intersections on
North Montana Avenue and North Bozeman Avenue north of Peach permanent.
We requested temporary stop signs be installed during the construction on Rouse. They were and they have
helped reduce and slow traffic significantly. Thank you.
I understand there is a process for determining whether or not permanent stop signs are necessary. I amasking the city to forego this process and instead, just keep the stop signs that are already installed. Doing so
will save us time and the taxpayer dollars a study would require. The immediate community fully supports
the idea of making the signs permanent. Those who travel these streets on a regular basis are used to stop
signs being there. The holes are dug. I will volunteer to replace the road construction company's stop signs
with signs owned by city in the existing holes.
The primary reason for requesting permanent four-way stops is safety. Infants, toddlers, and young children
now live on three of the four corners. This area is also a corridor for kids that will pass through on their way
to school or to the Storymill Park. Five years ago there were not many children in this neighborhood. That
has changed. In addition, North Bozeman Avenue in particular has become a route for drivers that use the
fairgrounds as an alternate route to and from Oak. Drivers also seem to use North Bozeman as their route to
the center of downtown. Drivers traveling north or south on North Bozeman Avenue or North Montana tend
to assume they have the right of way.
A study to determine whether or not signs are necessary will not tell the whole story. A study will count the
number of vehicles. A study will not measure the average vehicle speed or driver intent. A study will not
show whether or not a driver intends to slow down or look both ways as they pass through uncontrolled
intersections. A study will not show whether or not a driver is looking at their cell phone as they speed
through an uncontrolled intersection that my daughter is crossing.
Thank you.
