Dear City of Bozeman, I am writing today to express my dismay at the lack of civility some people are
engaging in when it comes to their opposition to a face mask mandate and to voice my support for a
science-based face mask mandate. My grandmother, born in 1913, grew up very poor, she survived the
Great Depression, was the first in her family to go to college, became a school teacher and lived through
WW2. When she was alive, she told me many stories of her life during the Great Depression and WW2,
many of which included stories of the sacrifices people made, particularly during WW2. The Greatest
Generation made plenty of sacrifices, and not just on the front lines in France and Britain. The folks at
home, the civilian army, one could say, also made sacrifices. They recycled every thing they could, planted
victory gardens, went without many basic items, all so they could feed, clothe and protect the troops
abroad. Personal sacrifice was never in doubt. It was patriotic. I'm sure my grandmother, along with the
soldiers of WW2, would be rolling in their graves right now if they could hear how selfish (not to mention
uninformed) some people are being about wearing a darn mask. As President Trump has said, we are
fighting a war. Wartime is a time for all of us to sacrifice a little so that we can win. We wear a mask to keep
our economy open and to protect the grocery clerk, the nurse, the doctor, the hardware store employee.
These are the troops we need to protect. We also wear a mask to protect our parents, grandparents and
our children. We sacrifice a little (and a very minor sacrifice it is to wear a mask) to protect each other and
to keep our economy open. It is our civic duty to do what we can to protect our community and our
economy. Please make sure you govern with sound science as your compass. Do not cave to the vitriolic
voices of a few misinformed folks who don't seem to have any sense of what civic duty is or what it means
to be a true patriot. I do hope history will look kindly upon us and perhaps deem this time as another great
moment when we came together to win a war, a time when we prioritized the safety of our fellow citizens
and the health of our economy over our own personal selfishness and unwillingness to wear one little
mask.
