The stormwater system shall be maintained on a regular basis to ensure the long-term
functioning of the pond, culverts, and outlet structures as designed. The storm system
maintenance will be the responsibility of the property owner. Maintenance shall be performed by
qualified personnel in accordance with the inspection form and maintenance checklist provided
in this Appendix.
System failure may occur when standing water remains in the pond for more than 48 hours
following a rain event. This failure can result from fine sediments clogging the gravel drain at
the bottom of the pond or clogging of the outlet orifice. To remedy this the orifice should be
inspected and cleaned. Cleaning or replacement of gravel drain bed may be needed if sediment
has clogged the gravel. Table 5.7-1 of Montana Post-Construction Storm Water BMP Design
Guidance Manual (shown below) outlines the recommended maintenance activity and the
frequency of maintenance of the system.
