First Name Susan Last Name Bilo Email Address skbilo@gmail.com Phone Number (406) 624-6382 Comments Topic: Blackwood Developement Suggestions New development in Bozeman provides opportunities to proactively plan to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions per square foot of building space and to reduce water use both inside and out. You cannot require developers and builders to build high-performance buildings that are above code, but you can ask them if they are willing to in order to help Bozeman achieve sustainability goals. Energy- and water-efficient homes and businesses have lower utility bills that help pay for any additional construction costs passed on to buyers. A savvy developer/builder will recognize this as a marketing opportunity. Educated buyers will recognize the value. There are multiple above-code programs for residential and commercial buildings that can be utilized (I can provide a list). If the developer/builder is not willing to consider, ask them to at least: 1. Orient buildings correctly to reduce winter heating and summer cooling energy use simultaneously. 2. Design buildings “solar-ready” for future solar hot water and/or electricity system installations. If interested, they can tour the Mountain Horizons solar subdivision in Whitehall. The homes receive 20% of their winter heat through the simple passive solar design and are solar-ready. http://www.nahn.com/mountain-horizon/ 3. Use the U.S. EPA’s WaterSense Home guidelines. Integrating these suggestions will require more up-front planning, but the benefits last the lifetime of the buildings.
