Please do whatever you can to persuade the County Board of Health to require
masks in public places, or at least indoor public places. Even though Montana's
numbers are relatively low, and health officers are making decisions based on the
capacity of the county to treat people, that shouldn't prevent us from trying to
do all we reasonably can to prevent more people from getting the virus. Knowing
there's a bed available for me at the hospital isn't nearly as comforting as
knowing that the chances of my getting sick in the first place are being reduced.
I have heard businesses say that they wish the county would require masks
because that would take the burden off the businesses to require them. People
object that enforcement would be too difficult but (1) a requirement would
enable people to remind other people to please wear a mask without requiring
involvement of law enforcement, and (2) even if we only achieved 80% compliance
that would be a lot better than what we have now. And it would send a message
to visitors (and residents) that COVID-19 needs to be taken more seriously in
our county than it is now.
We can't afford to go backward in the reopening. We can't continue being
uncomfortable in most public places until a vaccine is found. It's not fair to local
business for us to rely on Amazon for much of our shopping. Requiring masks will
help us to do as much as we can while waiting for better times.
Thank you for whatever you can do--
