HomeMy WebLinkAbout6-21-2020 Public Comment - S. Heis - Bike and Pedestrian Projects BudgetFrom:Sherry Heis To:Agenda Cc:Ralph Zimmer; Marilee Brown Subject:2020/2021 budget adoption Date:Sunday, June 21, 2020 5:07:54 PM To the City Commission, I am submitting this public comment to request the City Commission budget an additional $50,000for bike/pedestrian projects to be located either inside or outside the curb lines. I am a Bozeman resident for over 40 years and have had the good fortune to be able to walk to work, year round, for over 20 years. While most citizens on my route do a great job of keeping their sidewalks cleared, I have had to navigate hazardous stretches, in need of upgrading. In particular, the north side of College Avenue from 11th to 19th. I do understand that this stretch is scheduled forupgrade in 2024 but until then, it is a safety issue for pedestrians trudging through chunks of snow, ice, and road dirt plowed onto the sidewalk as there is no separation between the road and the sidewalk. There are sections with no sidewalk at all. The only crosswalks are located on 13th and 15th which forces those of us coming from 16th, 14th, and 12th to either cross College Avenue without a crosswalk or navigate a dangerous sidewalk to get to a crosswalk. This situation is notunique. Other examples include Oak St. near the Cannery District and Fairgrounds, and the FrontStreet Connector Project. Addressing hazards for pedestrians is very expensive and while $50,000 isa good start, much more is needed to identify and fix treacherous sidewalks and road crossingslocated within the city. An additional $50,000 would be funds well-spent for the safety of those ofus that enjoy walking every day. Thank you for your consideration, Sherry Heis 418 S. 12th Ave. Bozeman
