Members and Friends of the Bozeman (Area) Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee (PTS),
This Monday evening, June 22, the Bozeman City Commission will be adopting its
budget for the 2020/2021 fiscal year (July 1 2020 through June 30 2021). That budgetearmarks $50,000 for bicycle/pedestrian projects.
A number of local bike/ped advocates, including all three of our committee's officers, are
asking the Commission to budget an ADDITIONAL $50K (making a total of $100K) forbike/ped projects. That additional $50K is just a drop in the bucket, but every drop helps.
We hope you will join with us in this effort. If you do, you should consider one or both
of the following options: (1) sending an email to the Commission AND/OR (2) speaking atMonday night's Commission meeting. If you do either or both of those two things, please
SPECIFICALLY request that the Commission budget an ADDITIONAL $50,000 forbike/ped projects to be located either inside or outside the curb lines. (Note that sidewalks
and separated paths are typically located outside the curb lines.)
Sending an email is easy. Send it by Monday noon to agenda@BOZEMAN.NET "Signthe email with your name. If you are willing, include your residential address so the
Commission will know you are a City resident.
Since the Commission is still meeting remotely because of COVID-19 concerns, speaking at a Commission meeting is more difficult that it was previously. The meeting starts
at 6 PM but conceivably could run very late (last week's meeting adjourned at 11:45 PM). Atthe very end of this message, you will find the meeting agenda. That agenda contains
instructions for speaking at the meeting. One option would be to speak very early in themeeting at Agenda Item G.
Communications to the Commission, either written or verbal, could be as short as stating
the request bolded and underlined above. Alternatively, you could add your personal rationalefor making that request. Immediately following my "signature" below are some comments
that might trigger some thoughts of your own that you could express in your own words.
The meeting can be watched on cable channel 190 or on-line as described in the belowagenda.
Thank you for considering supporting additional funding for bike/ped projects.
Ralph W. Zimmer, Chairperson
Bozeman (Area) Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Committee

Some Statements Supporting Additional Bike/Pedestrian
Funding
Many of the handicapped, young, older, and economically deprived in our community need
viable and safe facilities to accommodate their transportation needs and desires.
These funds could be used for such things as crosswalks, flashing beacons, and ADAcompliant ramps which benefit not only non-motorized travelers but also motorists.
Non-motorized facilities benefit both transportation users and recreational users.
Sidewalks and separated paths remove non-motorized travelers from the roadway occupied by
vehicles and thus reduce the hazards caused by conflicts in the roadway.
Improvements in non-motorized facilities induces more use of such facilities and that reducesboth fossil fuel consumption and climate change while also increasing public health through
encouraging exercising and lowering air pollution.
Within the City limits, four bicyclists and pedestrians were run over or killed just last year.Facilities and features built with the requested additional funding would reduce the hazards of
such incidents.
Nationwide pedestrian and bicyclist deaths are increasing and are at their highest level sinthirty years. Safer facilities are needed to fight this unfortunate trend.
Vehicles are again getting bigger and heavier and pedestrians and bicyclists are no match for
them when they meet. We need to do all we can to reduce such collisions.
