Dear Commissioners:
I was glad to see that you are undertaking a broad review on how members of minority groups
are treated in Bozeman. This is an important step in response to the recent protests, as well asin making this community a better place for everyone who lives here. We can do better.
I would like to direct you to the website: 8cantwait.org which lists, gives details on, and
promotes a set of eight policies to reduce the ability of police to harm citizens. Where are weat with these in Bozeman? It would be great to see Bozeman join the list of communities that
have adopted all of these policies for our police department.
The eight policies -- in brief -- are:- ban chokeholds and strangleholds
- require de-escalation- require warning before shooting
- require officers to exhaust all alternatives before shooting- duty to intervene
- ban shooting at moving vehicles- require use of force continuum
- require comprehensive reporting
Thank you for your time and consideration.
